Foam Insulation

OK you speaker gurus, when replacing the rotted foam material inside a speaker cabinet, is there an advantage of replacing with foam material or is fiberglass insulation just as good.

I was given a pair of Powered Advents that didn't work but I have them up and singing now.

Someone had been inside these already and left a few crumbs of the original foam left inside the cabinet.

I can probably get some insulation for free but I wouldn't mind buying acoustical foam if it is actually better.

Thanks for any suggestions :thmbsp:

AcoustaStuf, available at Parts Express and Madisound. Better than fiberglass or foam and IS different from plain fiberfill.

Has anybody tested to determine what the proportions should be when replacing fiberglass or foam? It's highly unlikely that a 1:1 substitution of one material for another will ever produce the correct results.

Some later versioins of the New Large Advent had 5 blocks of foam. They were about 3 inches thick and about 1 foot square.

What you need to get, if you really must have foam, is open cell foam sold a fabric stores. Stuff the box neatly - not too much and it should work fine.

However, FG has been found after much research to be the best because of it fine fiber diameter. Polyester fiberfil is a good second choice if you don't want to mess with FG.

It's funny you should mention that.
I just went into a home store earlier today and looked at the open cell foam stuff they had.

Maybe a little paranoid here but I was actually wondering if this or any stuffing material would be safe.

The amps/electronics of the Powered Advents are mounted on the inside of the back panel. Possible fire hazard ??

I wish I had been able to see just how Advent originally had the foam placed.

Thank you :thmbsp:

Go with the fiberglass suggestion. The correct amount, as quoted by SpruceMoose, will impact your bass response in a positive way.

Since I can get the fiberglass for next to nothing, from a friend, I think I will give it a shot.

Thanks Everybody:thmbsp:
