I just returned home with a pair of Focal Aria 7 speakers that I purchased off of CL from a really nice guy. We listened to music, chatted ect, and spun various discs critiquing the speakers. I am amazed at how fantastic these things sound. He said he paid close to $2500.00 US for them 15 years ago from a speaker builder in San Fransisco. Long story short, I purchased them and was on my way. Any one here familiar with Focal speaker systems?

A well regarded manufacturer, both for full systems and for drivers, which were (are?) used by many high end speaker companies.

Yup! I'm listening to my >15 year old Focal Expression speakers right now and they sound incredible.

These are my Focals.

Beautiful. These arial 7s have kevlar midrange and bass drivers. Tweeter is just like yours. I belove they are transmission line speakers with a port on the back. Compared to my tannoys they have amazing detail and clarity wide soundstage

Yes, I have a pair of the Aria 5s I built in the 90's still use them.

So how do the Focals stand up to vintage speakers? I find them to be similar to the Yamaha NS-1000's except for the bass. On the Focals the bass is quicker, and more balanced? Compared to the Tannoys they are not as warm but very detailed and spacious.

Aria 7's

The original Aria 7 Tower as designed by Joe D'Appolito.
Both Mid/woofers are duel VC using one coil up to 2500Hz The other only coming in at about 300Hz to enhance the low end. The woofers and tweeters were Kevlar.

Yep that em. Exact same drivers and cabinet size and design.

I've enjoyed the Focal speakers I've heard in the showrooms. I have Focal drivers in my car and they are superb!

They always had a crisp clean sound to my ears, car or home. I really want to hear some of their studio offerings one day.

There must have been about a thousand different iterations of those Arial kits. One of my favorite to ogle over had Raven tweeters, I'm pretty sure E-Speakers was one of the bigger suppliers and customizers of this DIY line. You've got an awesome speaker there. Nothing compares to the room filling sound a good, full size quality speaker can produce.

I'm going to crack them open tonight to see what the cabinet design/driver detail is. The cabs are a ivory white?....if thats a color over mdf. Routed edges, and a huge port/scoop at the back bottom. Transmission line I'm guessing. I'll post some pics when I get up and running.

I'm very anxious to see "the goods". The driver model numbers and arrangement could be a very good indicator of where the parts were purchased and if any alterations to the original design were made.

I purchased from the original owner. They are identical to the pick of the aria 7's posted on this thread. He purchased them from speaker city in san Fran. They can be biwired too.
