I love this kinda music, but don't know much about it, other than I hear it called Mountain Music, Bluegrass, Appalachian folk... what is it really?

To me, it's more like ORIGINAL country music... Irish Jigs that have been Americanized..

Does anyone know of any sites that stream this kind of music, without throwing in modern country?

Any other great groups you can recommend? Gotta have a fiddle, banjo, and if a dulcimer, even better... I've heard a couple bands that used flute too, that sounded even more Irish based and really like that the best..

Bluegrass has had quite a resurgence in popularity the past 10 or 15 years, at least it seems that way here.

There are alot of traditional bands, but it seems the most popular groups are more of a crossover, or modern mix of bluegrass and other styles. My personal favorite is Leftover Salmon. They call their music polyethnic cajun slamgrass. It's a mix of bluegrass, rock, and zydeco. Check out 'Bridges to Bert' and 'Ask the Fish' (live album, with a cover of When the levee breaks). Not traditional bluegrass, but still pretty good.
 
mmm... likin the Leftover Salmon... but it's still a little too "modern" country... I still like more of the backwoods sound.. .like the people playing it haven't been around any modern influences in the last 60 years..
 
If Leftover is too modern for ya, sounds to me like you need to go to the State Theater next week to see the Hackensaw Boys! You won't regret it.

Sent it to my wife to see if she'd like to do that... Gonna go see The Slickee Boys this Sunday at the 9:30, so don't know how she feels about two bands in one week..

BTW, in looking around, found another local artist I didn't know about.. from Fredericksburg VA... Keller Williams.. I've always liked String Cheese Incident, and didn't know he worked with them at times..
 
Leftover, K-Dub (Keller), Hackensaw Boys .. the Cheese! You guys are talking my language.

I was going to go to the Northwest String Summit this year, but can't make it. Check out the groups that will be playing there.

Another group I really like is Railroad Earth.
 
Glad you like them Simi, I'm a huge fan. Great music, and super performances from all the members. Tentoze introduced me to them a couple years ago, and I've been listening ever since.

Classification is tough though: They play a lot of different styles, but they're tough to pin down... I'd imagine their records would be broadly classified as "Folk" but it goes a lot further than that. They delved down deep into the music of the older players of the Appalachian mountain traditions, so it has elements of Old Time, Mountain, Ragtime, Jug & String music, with some Celtic music thrown in, but even with all that it's still tough to cubbyhole.

If you like that kind of music you would love to be in Bristol, Va./Tn. for the Rhythm and Roots Festival. Not only do they have numerous artists at several different venues but people bring their instruments and get into informal "jam sessions" on street corners or anywhere else there is room for them to gather. Trampled by Turtles from Duluth MN. Wanted to book them for my daughters wedding. Booked a local bluegrass band instead, less $$.
