Following Money Trails--The Sleazy Side of Peer Reviews

Yet another reason to think before accepting all studies as fact:

http://app1.kuhf.org/mobile/npr228859954

Many people take studies to be gospel and adopt and adapt their lives around them. Before you go out and insist your doctor gives you a new medication or you stop drinking coffee or add powdered goat antlers to your morning cornflakes please take the time to find out who funded the study and how it was reviewed and more importantly make sure what was studied is what you use, for example, the coffee study, was it real brewed coffee they gave the rats to drink or an injection of highly concentrated coffee extract--it does matter. :scratch2:

Take care,

I remember a big deal made of pot studies on rats, "proving" it causes cancer.
The rats were made to smoke a machine rolled cigarette sized joint of high potency government weed every day. Wonder what the math works out to for a human? Maybe a pound?

Lol! Yes, and to counter that study, it was found to prevent cancer, in another study, lol.

Agreed ..... as with most "studies" of everything you need to see where the funding is coming from and who all the parties are that are involved - even the silent partners and "non-partial" observers.

The medical/pharmaceutical industry and the FDA are so corrupted by such "bad science" that it is, frankly, obscene. They create studies specifically designed to prove what they want to, select and throw out data when it doesn't suit their ends, etc... on a regular basis. When all else fails, they make up data and they lie. Then they publish abstracts that the media reports as "proving" whatever, when the data actually says the opposite. It's horrific!

Statin drugs --the most profitable product ever created-- are a good example of lies piled upon lies, that will keep doctors busy making money for many years to come, at the cost of millions of lives ruined and cut short.

Even daily aspirin was proven to cause pancreatic inflammation that leads to pancreatic cancer, one of the most deadly of all cancers. Faced with this, the industry kicked into high gear, and now there is a plethora of studies "proving" that daily aspirin may prevent cancers, including specifically pancreatic cancer. Look into the details to find the truth. You might want to get OFF of that aspirin!

Incidentally, the original bark remedies from which aspirin was first extracted/discovered do NOT cause the same side effects, a pattern that has been repeated numerous times. Nature tends to package multiple substances together in ways that are synergistic and well-balanced; identifying a single "active ingredient" and isolating it, then taking it in isolation without all the co-factors, usually leads to serious imbalances and side-effects. This is one area where Chinese medicine got it mostly right, and Western medicine has screwed things up, in the name of "science".

Doctors like to talk about "evidence based" decisions and claim they are "scientific". Nothing could be further from the truth, given how much they conspire and connive to create and disseminate horrible science, and how selectively they pick and choose which "evidence" they base their conclusions on.

Want a natural alternative "NSAID" which is fundamentally different from all others (the others all work on COX-1 or COX-2 pathways, and thus destroy parts of the gastrointestinal tract)? Look no further than Boswellia, whose side-effects are actually positive because it works (uniquely, among all known anti-inflammatories) on an entirely different pathway. But just try asking a doctor about it. I did, the last time I was in the hospital. The response was mind-bogglingly paranoid, narrow/closed-minded and unscientific in the extreme. Oh, and lest you think this is some new-age discovery with little support, Boswellia is essentially the same thing as the biblical "Frankinsense", the stuff the wise men brought to baby Jesus in the bible, 2000 years ago. One of the oldest known medicines.

Medicine is a BUSINESS, and after big oil, probably the biggest in the world. It's power is growing and growing, and they know it, which emboldens them to take bigger risks and do more egregious things. Years ago, it was illegal to advertise drugs directly to consumers, and for good reasons (at least from the doctors' viewpoint!). The drug companies lobbied congress, and now a huge percentage of advertising in America is for drugs, many of which are to counter-act the effects of other drugs.

This month is "breast cancer awareness month", and pink is widely seen in places like NFL football uniforms. But what do they do with all the money raised? Expand screening programs, X-raying many more women. Why? So they can prescribe more horrible drugs that don't even work, and do more surgeries with equally abysmal "success" rates. Even if no cancer is found, the radiation from the X-ray increases the chances of future cancers, so they are building their business in any case. How many other industries get people to donate money, purely to expand their business? If they really had cures, it would be different. But they actively suppress cures, to keep the gravy train going. That's why the "war on cancer" has been waged for over 50 years, yet cancer rates continue to increase. Real cures are attacked, derided and suppressed with a vigor. And it's not as if they cannot afford to advertise themselves. It's CRIMINAL, how they prey upon people's good intentions this way.

Incidentally, ever wonder why Jerry Lewis no longer does the telethon thing, yet it goes on without him? It's because he found out that a cure was found for muscular dystrophy, and all excited, he went to his people and said he was going to announce the great news on the television show. He was fired immediately, and viciously shut up with threats. They're making too much money to actually provide a cure!

They are ruthlessly killing people, and conning people. Yes, doctors sometimes save lives and do good things, too. And individually, many of them are (brainwashed) innocent, even well-meaning but ignorant tools of the pharmaceutical companies that are pulling their strings behind the scenes. But the good that exists in some parts of medicne shouldn't blind us to the rampant evil that increasingly permeates the rest!

The more I look into this stuff (and I spend as much time reading Pub Med stuff as I do on AK, at least!), the worse the picture looks. The industry does NOT bear scrutiny as anything other than corrupt and hypocritical in the extreme.

And don't kid yourself. The FDA looks after the interests of the INDUSTRY, NOT you, the consumer. It's a nice, cozy and extremely corrupt arrangement.

BULLSHIT.

My mom and aunt died from breast cancer.
My one brother is a radiologist, a cousin is a radiation oncologist, and I am a radiation safety officer with years of Navy, commercial power plant, national labs, DOE and DOD radiation site cleanups, and what you are spewing is diatribal bullshit and propaganda.

It is not a good thing to publish factoids with no basis in fact, no experience in the field, and no respect for those who face cancer in the western world, or go to doctors to "get" cancer.

You are so far off base you have become the very touchstone of what you are opining against.

Indeed. There's even a theory where slight increases of exposure to ionizing radiation above background may indeed be beneficial (though the jury is still out and it probably cannot be proven one way or the other).

In any event, you get as much additional ionizing radiation per year living in Denver (as opposed to a coastal city) as you do from an annual mammogram (~40 mrem). For that matter, a NYC-LA flight exposes you to nearly half as much ionizing radiation as a chest X-ray (5 vs. 10 mrem). FWIW, a flight from NY to Hong Kong would expose you to significantly more radiation than a chest X-ray.

What's amazing is how well science understands the effects of ionizing radiation compared to the effects of chemical pollutants and pharmaceuticals (and particularly combinations of chemical pollutants/drugs). Yet, the American public is scared $hitless of radiation but eats pharmaceuticals like candy. Go figure.
