Football Championship is a waste of time

Why do we need a national champion anyway? What purpose is served?

I think it was better when the Big 10 champion played the Pac 10 champion in the Rose Bowl and winning THAT was the big deal for Big 10 and Pac 10 fans. I presume the other conferences, which I paid no attention to, had similar and just as important rivalries in the Sugar Bowl, Orange Bowl and whatever.

Note that the University of Chicago doesn't even play football yet it hasn't hurt the school's reputation, has it? Where would you rather have your kid go, Chicago or Oklahoma? Harvard or LSU? Columbia or Nebraska?

Money, plain and simple.

Hmm...for a while, I think that it was Columbia that had the longest losing streak for years!

True enough, but Columbia did have some memorable teams under Lou Little, especially in the forties. The great Chicago Bears quarterback Sid Luckman played under Little at Columbia as did the famous writer Jack Kerouac, a running back on scholarship with great natural talent but lacking in desire for football as his interests were captured by the eary formation of what became the "beat generation" started mainly by ex-Columbia students living off campus like Allan Ginsberg et al.

I believe that the title currently belongs to another excellent academic institution, Northwestern University.

I was at the streak ending win back in 1983 or 84 and Denny Green was the Head Coach. They tore down the goalposts and tossed them in Lake Michigan!!

And that program was the BEST program of any of the Universities I attended; Marquette and UW-Milwaukee didn't even have teams!!

Nothing, really, except anytime there's competition, many people want to know who's best. Nothing wrong with that, really, as long as it's kept in perspective. College Football has gotten way past that, but a lot of people do enjoy it. There are lots more important things to worry about than what other people's hobbies and pastimes are.

Depends on what they wanted to study. Petroleum Engineering? LSU or Oklahoma. Meteorology? Oklahoma (hands down). Pre-law, pre-med, English, History? Chicago, Hahvahd or Columbia, definitely.

By the way, of the "prestige" schools you mentioned, Harvard and Columbia do have football teams; they play in the Ivy League.

This may sound sacreligious, coming from Tennessee, the home of the Mighty Vols, but I think something is BAD outta whack when the football coach's salary dwarfs the college president's...But I never bought into the whole sports madness thing, anyhow.

No ****.

Here in Lexington the big news is that the U of K equipment manager, the so-called "Mr. Wildcat" died. Big news in this tank town, 2 days front page news. They're even gonna have public viewing of the body, like he was Abraham Lincoln or some goddam thing. All for the guy that handed out the jockstraps.

They make a big play at being sophisticated in Lexington and then show their true rube colors by going ga-ga over bullshit like this.

Looks like he was an admired and well loved man. RIP, Mr. Keightley.

Reminds me of a "trainer" my sister knew where she attended HS.

Life is indeed "full if ironies", Mr. Brennan.

Why do we need to be so damn competative? Why do we need to pay a guy MILLIONS that can make it to the end zone, or past the checkered flag?

I'd rather see the people teaching my kids make that kind of money.. (I have no kids, but understand what i mean) or the guy that is giving me the double bypass have a cheering squad...

We're all fugged up when it comes to who is worth what.. Too much money on sports now to make it legit.. you really think all the betting the coaches and refs do makes it honest? I feel like any more all sports are more like the WWE..

A fireman makes less than I do for risking his life. I sit and wait for someone that can't figure out how to print to ask for help, for a lot more money.. we're all screwed up...
