Was watching Bob Costas's show last night, And the subject was how retired players with injuries, Can't get any medical care. He interviewed a few Lineman Etc. Then he's sitting in front of the great Earl Campbell, Who's in a wheel chair. The guy looked about 70 years old, As a kid just learning the game in the late 70's, Early 80's, I was always amazed by this guy, And when there was an Oiler's game on, My dad always dropped everything to see what "Earl" would do that afternoon. After following all the great RB's of the era, No one left such a wake of destruction as Campbell. As a team with zero weapon's, He faced 7, 9 man fronts weekly, And he made them pay. He is the only RB to injure defensive players bad enough to leave the game, And make them back off at the point of contact. It was a sad sight, And was shocking, After how he tore up the NFL for 6 years. For a small taste of this guys destruction, Check out this footage.

I loved to watch Earl too. Think Larry Czonka but bigger and badder. He was a sight to behold. I loved watching him run as much as I did Walter Payton.
So is he in a chair because of playing football? That's very very sad...

I guess he had a spine injury as a teen, Then his time in the NFL accelerated the break down of tissue in that area. Man, That dude took some abuse, But dished out plenty. I also never missed a Payton/Dickerson/Dorsett game, But Campbell was just so out of control when he ran, It was nuts.

It was nuts watching him run. He had a pretty short career as a result of his style I guess. Sure was damn entertaining though.

That is sad about Earl. I used to love watching him trample over DBs. I remember one game where he took a step in the chest of standing DB to get over/through him.

Gerald Riggs is also in that category of punishing tacklers.

That helmet in the chest shot is in the video, Also the brutal hit on the goal line with "The Hit Man" Jack Tatum, Of the Raiders, The only time I remember Campbell being hurt and leaving the game.
