Just a guess but it looks like a sloppy surround replacements or the surrounds were coming loose from the woofer and were re-glued.

Gently push the cones in/out to see if there's any voice coil rub from poor alignment during the gluing procedure.

That white'ish discoloring is common on these rubber surround woofers, its not from surround replacement or re-glued although that looks slightly worse than I've seen. It's usually caused by the rubber drying out, as long as there are no signs of cracking or other damage they are functionally ok.

One of the many forte/2 Ive owned had this, I was able to get rid of it by using a damp rag to wipe them clean then use a product for conditioning rubber/vinyl such as 303 protectant that is used for marine and automotive applications, can usually buy it at walmart or auto parts stores. Meguires makes a good product for this too, I would avoid things like armor all or tire dressings. Just use a very light amount sprayed on to a clean cotton rag and wipe gently around just the rubber area, not the paper cone, should improve it a lot or get rid of it if its not too bad.

Seems forte2 have it more than original fortes, but easy to see it on a quick google image search or other for sale ads for these speakers. Its a known issue for quite some time.

I have used silicon spray for this very purpose on many rubber surrounds over the years. NOT foam surrounds, I think the small amount of petroleum distillate in the silicone spray may accelerate deterioration of FOAM surrounds. Although, if you check the owner’s manual in your car, it will say to spray the foam weatherstripping with silicone spray.

Spray it on, wipe it off, repeat until brand new.

as i mentioned above, i found some beautiful 1976 cornwalls, so passed on the forte ii -- they went pretty quickly.

here are the cornwalls:

I was looking at those Fortes too. They did go fast. How do those Cornwalls sound in that room? It looks to be about the same size as my studio (11X14). I'm torn between Forte and Crites CS B. I am concerned my room would be too small for the the big cabs. I have KG 4.2 now, so just a bit smaller than a Forte. They sound great and image well, but I want to upgrade.

Nice :) I too like the Forte but the 1" throat in the midrange of the Cornwall wins out if the room will accommodate the speaker.

the cornwalls sound wonderful -- the scale and dynamics are great and the imaging is also quite good. i had a pair of chorus previously and couldn't get myself to love them -- these cornwalls beat the chorus up one side and down the other! (to be fair, i changed to a tube amp after getting rid of the chorus)

Thanks. Encouraging. Makes me want to hold out for the bigger speaks. Is your room about the same as my 11X14, or is there a lot more behind what looks like your listening position?

This is my studio. I am standing right on the back wall for the pic, which is my listening position, not to be confused with the drum stool where I practice. I'd love some Crites CS B, or Cornwalls, but I want them to work in my room too. They will physically fit, those bass amp cabs in the center are about as wide at 24 inches.

No offense, but I always discourage the hand press method of determining VC rub. You'll rarely press finger/thumb at the same rate.

None taken.

I actually use my fingertips of each hand. A little concentration gets me by just fine.

To each their own.

my room is 10'x15'. the center of the baffles of the cornwall are about 7.5" apart (so the inside edges of the speakers are about 5.5' apart). from the front baffles to the listening position is about 9'. there's an additional ~3.5' behind the seating position. room treatments are first reflections using 2 2'x4' gik acoustics panels on each side and another 2 2'x4' panels behind the listening position.

Just tried my DATS3 this week and they have a rub and buzz test in there. I had some known bad drivers and it caught them all. Yeah it was $100 or so when I got them but if you fiddle with speakers much they are well worth it. Lots of other tests too but I have not made time to check the accuracy of things like ESR and capacitance and resistance.

That's a cool little tool. I probably should have gotten one years ago.
