Forte Audio Preamplifier Model 40

Hi,

I would need some info about a Forte Audio Preamplifier Model 40.
I’d like to know from which year it is, its retail price and any valuable comment I welcome.
I only know it has a separate power supply and it is described as a Pure Class A.
By the way, how would it compare to my Classe Audio Model five (also called DR-5); is it better, inferior or just different?

It's from the early 90s. I almost bought one (to go with a Forte Model 4 amp), but found that it just had way too much gain - all the useful range on the volume control was below 9 o'clock.

The Model 40 was introduced in 1991, and came in 3 versions: a line-stage with no phono section (Model 40h), an active model with phono (40p), and a phono-stage only model (40ps). Although Nelson Pass was still heading up Threshold/Forte at the time, it is my understanding that he had no direct input on the design of the equipment that came to market in 1991.

From everything I've read, the Model 40 is a superb pre-amp, and at current used prices qualifies as a bonafide audio bargain. I've not used this preamp (I have a Model 2, which was the predecessor to the Model 40), but I have 3 Forte amps from this era and they are all excellent sounding and well-built. Plus, if you ever need it worked on, Jon Soderberg, who involved in the design and production of Threshold and Forte gear from that era, offers service and upgrades through his company, Vintage Amp Repair.
