Forte Problem

I have a pair of original Forte that have never made it into regular rotation, but were great second speakers in a dual speaker setup for certain types of music.

These were purchased cosmetically challenged, but mechanically sound, and had the Crites tweeter upgrade done.

Regardless, I have wanted to refurbish these cosmetically, and while having them apart, wanted to do some of Moray James' tweaks. However, I have a new problem.

When out in the garage last year, one was knocked off a chair, and fell on a top corner. The cosmetic damage I can fix, but it appears to have caused some mechanical damage.

I hooked one up last night to remind myself of the sound (B&W on the other channel), then decided to hook up both. Well things sounded way wrong in the speaker that fell.

It almost sounded like a reverse polarity, but when I switched wires, it put the amp in protection mode. When I switched back, protection mode again.

Before disassembly, I put the multimeter on the terminals, and both speakers read at just over 4 ohms.

Once disassembled, I tested each driver. In the good speaker, I read 4.4 ohms woofer, 12.1 ohms mid, and 8.8 ohms tweeter. In the bad speaker, I read 4.4 ohms woofer (same), 15.0 ohms mid (2.9 ohms higher), and 8.8 ohms tweeter (0.3 ohms higher). Not sure if the provides any clue.

I also read all of the sets of terminals off the crossovers, and each returned very similar values. There was no obvious physical damage to any component, and I disassembled the mid from the broken speaker without finding any visible damage.

Welcome thoughts from others as to specific tests or diagnosis that I can do. It'll be a few weeks before the cabs are ready for the drivers anyways.

That was my thought too, but with the drivers all showing neither open or closed circuits, and the xovers having no open circuits, I was a bit stumped.
 
Well I took a break from working on the cabs, and thought I'd spend a few minutes looking at the drivers. Dug up a nice vintage Kenwood I had for the bench test.

So I brought the box of drivers and the xover into the house, and stated to hook them up to the xover and the amp.

What surprised me was how much condensation was on the drivers, especially the woofer. It occurred to me that my inhouse humidity is higher than normal (it is spring), and that I tested the speakers about a half hour after bringing them in from the garage the other day. Possibly I had a condensation-caused short?

So, I left everything inside for a few hours, allowing everything to warm up and dry off.

Net result, all drivers appeared to working as intended, and nothing tripped a relay or blew a fuse in the Kenwood. Even at obnoxious volumes, everything sounded fine.

So possibly the driver issue was just situational, and we're A-OK.
