Forte w/ "ALL UPGRADES" on Way

Here are the upgrades:

Crites B&K Type Forte Crossovers (pair)
Crites CD76TiM Titanium Dome Tweeter Diaphragms (pair)
Klipsch Part # 127122 Titanium Dome Midrange Diaphragms (pair) Purchased directly from Klipsch
Crites Bandpass Filters (pair)

That's about what I thought and I'm sorry to say it doesn't surprise me at all. I feel for you.

I like to tell people that Bob offers a great service to those that want their Fortes back to factory like new listening condition which is good for most people I suppose, but for me I have much higher needs then what he has to offer.

Here is part of a friends comments that was over at my place that I gave a a demo for comparing the stock pair of Fortes that were in good condition.

So why now? He did something today that not many people have the opportunity to do. He gave me an A/B/A audition of his modified speakers vs. a stock pair of Fortes. We all have made upgrades over time with various aspects of our systems and much of the time we have to rely on our memories of what something used to sound like. Well today, we didn't need our memories and we had quite an experience to say the least. We listened to his first. Beautiful sounding as always. Then we quickly hooked up the stock Fortes. Now please try and understand my intentions as I go on here. I am not trying to be rude, offensive, or disrespectful in any way, shape, or form. I am trying to be constructive with my comments but will be also direct and to the point. When we switched over to the stock Fortes, I could not believe my ears. The difference that I heard from going from the modded Fortes to the stock Fortes was so great that I think I may have been in shock. It has been so long since I have heard a stock pair of Fortes that I had forgotten what they had sounded like. My memory of them were that they were dynamic, fun to listen to, and overall a decent speaker. After listening to the modded Fortes and then switching over to the stock.....I literally could not listen through the entirety of a whole song. They were lifeless, they sounded restrained and congested. They sounded like what detail they had was being smeared. And what got me the most was the tonality. The voice, the piano, the cymbals, etc.....none of it sounded right. I literally asked SET12 to stop playing the song because it was grating on my ears....the listener fatigue was so high, and the sounds coming from the stock speakers were so displeasing that I could not take it any more.

So what causes something like the above? or in your case?

Well IMO iron core inductors do the most damage. They compress the sound stage and they keep most of the imaging between the speaker boundaries.

The inductors are tiny which contribute to some leanness IMO.

Another area that I hear with inductors is their ability to sound coherent though out their working frequency range. Meaning some inductors and most iron cores can sound down right lumpy and slow and even some what peak like in certain frequencies. Its really something to hear this and I would of never of known till I experience North Creek inductors. I hear it even in other brand speakers.

Your new crossover used an iron core inductor in the mid's. I can't imagine the likely damage there subjectively.

The caps aren't bad as I have a friend using the same caps with his DIY ALK Universal networks that use large gauge North Creek Inductors and they sound pretty great to him.

I use the Ti mid and I found with the Forte 1 I just didn't need a bandpass. As the coupling caps for the tweeters crossover are at a higher crossover frequency than the Forte 2 even though the Klipsch spec sheet say's otherwise.

I would of hoped that all new wiring was used. The old wire can really sound pretty bad with age. I heard a pair once that was so dark sounding I could hardly believe what I was hearing.

Associated electronics go a long ways as well especially with what I did. But I suspect it wouldn't make a huge difference with stock Fortes or even Bob's networks.

I guess with all the hoopla over Fortes you expected more and I don't blame you but IMO Bob's networks don't go far enough to get what I and others have gotten from extreme mods. Also it may seem what you did was pretty extreme for most people it is. It just wasn't far enough.

If you could by a cheap plane ticket here I'd put you up for a weekend just to prove to you how far the Forte can go. I'd even fetch my buddies stock Forte's to contrast this. And we are not talking something subtle. Its kind of like contrasting a stock Forte to a Forte that sound's like it should sell for $10,000. I'm not saying that one has to spend what I spent! after all sony6060 spent a $1,000 and from his reports he has a lot of what I have. Its about spending your money on the right stuff IMO.

Would it be worth it?

Well my new friend John drove a 1000mi to hear to hear my claims you can read his (jdg123) comments on page 31 of the above link to my thread. It changed his entire perception of what is possible. Right down to building his own DIY networks and selling his $1300 ALK ES networks.

No doubt your burnt out on all this but I hope you can keep all this in the back of your mind.

Best wishes

I sold the upgraded Fortes last Thursday, no regrets.

"you say tomato, I say tomahto"

Way (I mean WAY) too many variables to consider in order for me to make an informed reply...

I wish you well in getting the 'right' speakers for your taste :thmbsp:

Not impressed either

Thanks for the reply. Perhaps I'm impatient. I sold the upgraded Fortes last Thursday, no regrets.

Well I was never impressed by forte's either.
I thought they were too harsh and in effect sounded a little plasticky in the mid range and harsh in the highs. I believe they were original.

I like cornwalls - those IMHO are worth the klipsch hype.

Cool.

the OP bought a pair of Forte ll and found that he preferred the sound balance of a Heresy better so he sold his Forte ll and he bought a mint set of Forte. Wanting more from the Forte the OP felt confident enough in them to make a substantial investment into the Forte (150% of his purchase price) and he upgrade them.
Not trying to suggest that your comment and opinion of the Forte are not valid but in the context of this thread I cannot see the point of your post at this time? This thread has and is about upgrading the Forte and the apparent value of the modifications done. Not about whether people like or do not like the Forte or other Klipsch models.
I am sure that there are forum members who are most interested to understand better the reason(s) which lead to the OP's choice to walk away from his modified Forte. I expect that a good number of members here have been or are considering the same or similar modifications for their Forte and or Forte ll. The Op's experience while most unfortunate is very useful to provide balance in terms of pros and cons for those who are considering such a project themselves. Best regards Moray James.

That's good play time over which I would expect to hear substantial motion toward the end goal. Was there improvement over that time period or was this an issue of simply nowhere near enough change for you to feel waiting longer would be of value? I have made modifications like yours a good number of times I have developed a feel for where things are going. I have never felt that there was no or very little improvement as you seem to have found though. I generally caution to be patient to those who make such changes but who are finding that they are disappointed. Two to three weeks generally does the trick for even the most skeptical of modifiers. I personally have trouble understanding this process some go through as I generally hear the changes immediately and waiting for me is simply for the icing on the cake not the cake itself. I guess situations like this will make members who are close enough to SET12's home make the effort to visit and audition first.
There are just so many variables which may have contributed to your situation not the least of which are your own expectations and personal taste on down to your gear and set up. I am sorry that you have made so much effort and have not found yourself rewarded by your efforts. I hope that there has or will be a learning experience here for you so that you walk away knowing more than when you started and that the experience gained helps to direct you toward speakers which will meet your needs. As they say YMMV. Thank you for taking the time and for making the effort to contribute to the forum now at a time where you likely just want to do some forgetting. It is most generous of you to share what you have experienced especially when things did not work out the way you had hoped for. Best regards Moray James.

Thanks for all the replies. It is really no big deal. The Fortes are very nice just not what I'm looking for. Glad I tried the upgrades.

I have four active set-ups at home and always tinkering with at least one or two. Just trying to find a fit for a pair of Klipsch somewhere. The Heresey are my favorite so far. I do have Cornwalls. They are about 75% done with some cabinet finishing, from Raw Birch to Hickory/Pecan veneer. Also, rebuilt the risers to accommodate Ernie Ball removable amp casters. Should have a feel for these in a few weeks. I have new Crites crossovers for the Cornwalls but not sure I will install them.

I to want to thank you for posting as well, I do feel the Cornwalls stock are a more musical speaker over a stock Forte. But with the mods I did, a stock Cornwall is not capable of what the extreme networks do for the Forte. I suspect that a Cornwall with extreme networks can do what I have the my Fortes doing.

For an interesting read check this guy out that was formally active, that is before he found out just how different inductors can sound. Especially the North Creek Inductors.

P.S. Oh yeah, I have such a distaste for many manufactures stock networks that I would be all active too! If I wasn't getting the results I have with extreme passives.

Stock Forte are ok with a good tube amp. Stock are dynamic sounding. The Forte depends upon the amplifier quality & we all know that.

Upgraded Forte with the SET12 (not others) crossover makes the Forte so superior to stock it is shocking. The imported from Germany C core midrange auto transformer in the SET12 design are likely so far superior to any other offering that without it top performance is masked. Another component are the coupling caps. Mondorf Supreme are likely the minimum spec cap for this task. I upgraded to Mondorf Silver/Oil for the midrange as ears are most sensitive to midrange frequencies. The titanium midrange brings forth another layer of depth in the music.

I owned Cornwalls. Great speaker and mine had oil caps in the crossover. That crossover in the Cornwall are superior to stock Forte crossovers. However, my SET12 crossover modified Forte are superior to the stock Cornwall now.

Bottom line is whatever a person is pleased with, they are pleased. That is all that matters.

Being new to all of this (though I was no amateur), I've finally learned what "Crites" meant, and I'm happy to see that he's just down the road from me in Russellville, AR.

I'm posting this here because I have a pair of original Forte's that I got off of craigslist for maybe $200 about 5 years ago. I'm very happy with them, though I'm always looking for "better!"

This thread was very helpful, but I'm wondering... is the investment in Crite's upgrades worth it?

X 2 Brother

Better yet can we buy a set 12 crossover to install?

Not sure if I understand...
Can you? Sure! Go for it! I'll send you my mailing address!
Can I? Right now... out of the question! haha! But future... very possible!

Would the crossover make the most difference?
I'd rather not have to break in the other parts since they all seem to be in great shape.

From my experience, the answer is no. The crossover is probably not a bad option but only if your crossover may need replacing or you want to be sure it is at original spec level.

To be fair, I should have spent more time with the Fortes as is (were), before any changes. I was hasty with the "upgrades", I really heard no difference. Go to my first post to see what was done.

Don't upgrade for the sake of upgrading. Determine specifically what you may want to accomplish and explore that path.

I have Cornwalls now and have ideas what I want to do but first I'm spending a great deal of time with them as is (Crites Xover only) before moving to the next step.

Doesn't surprise me that you didn't hear much of a difference.

The modifications just didn't go far enough.

The iron core inductors are so damaging. Even small air cores are damaging, granted less then iron cores but still a compromise.

If you were in my home and I demo'd a stock pair against what I did I'd bet I'd be seeing some interesting facial expressions from you. As I have from others that I have demo'd a stock contrast to. It's nothing subtle at all. In fact some people didn't even make it through one cut without demanding going back to the modified.
