Foster vs. Fostex

bright, maybe a bit "metallic" or sheen-y sounding is what I mean by it... think about a kazoo, or humming through a comb and tissue paper.

So what's that speaker you got in that picture anyway ???
What, in my avatar, under the cat?
That is a Fostex FE-207E twincone fullrange driver in a 1 cubic foot, rear-ported bass reflex cabinet (MDF with Baltic birch plywood front and rear baffle boards).

My opinion of them. Others like them a whole lot. YMMV, as they say...

I found a total of 5 RS1210dc drivers in Minimus 8 and Solo 8 boxes and have been playing around with enclosures. The 1210 is a later variant of the RS1197. A friend has a pair of the AlNico FE103s so we were able to do some driver swapping for comparisons. The enclosures we tried were Zigmahornets, Buschhorns, Rutter TQWTs and mass loaded BD Pipes. Though all suffered from the very forward mids of these drivers, in all cases the RS drivers were better sounding. The Fostex presentation was very thin compared to the more full sounding RS drivers. This may have been a case of weak magnets on the Fostex impairing them so as mhardy suggests, YMMV. In all cases, the tested enclosures were substantially better at imaging than the RS boxes. The BD pipes were easily the best of the replacement boxes but they do require 4 of the drivers.

Thanks for the input, I'm going to go eat some chicken now instead of choking it for a change ------- BURRPP !!! ---------

foster speaker(1) at goodwill should i???

hey guys theres a lone (1) 'foster' branded lodspeaker at goodwill for 5.99

couldn't fnd a model number
cabinet is really nice old school all plywood style, about the size of a heresey

couldn't see the drivers but based on wieght and foster logo dating they appear to be alnico

one maybe an 8-10" the other maybe a horn, interestingly the 'horn' is on the bottom, does this indicate that its really 1 full range alnico driver with a 'port' on the bottom?

should i or shouldn't i?

Look familiar? :)

In general I like the sound. Mine must have stiffened up a bit over the years as the impedance maximum is at about 240Hz. Not a huge problem in my application as they are not used below 200Hz.

They can be a bit shouty at times. I presume the zobel is intended to address this. Can anyone give me ballpark figures for component values? I am racking my brain to come up with the approximate freq. of the upper mid bump. I am not sure but I think it was in the 4k-6k range.

I am having some difficulty with channel balance but I am not sure whether that is due to the old HT rcvr driving them, my kludged up wiring scheme or the drivers themselves. Eventually I will take the time to figure that out but for now the balance control will suffice.
