Fostex Ribbon Speakers

I have an opportunity to look at a pair of Fostex RZ-2000 speakers. Two ribbon mid panels, on ribbon tweeter and a twelve inch bass driver with a styrofoam surround.

Anyone heard of these? Price, year manufactured ect?

After a grilling search I did find some info on Fostex ribbon drivers and it appears that these speaker systems were between 1200-1800 per panel depending on the amount of drivers. The ones I'm looking at are four ways which is the top of the heap exempt one bass driver instead of two. It has a twelve inch bass driver with no surround and during my research I discovered a forum where a German fellow raves about them stating that these speakers were very high quality. If I purchase them, of which I probably will I'll post pics tomorrow. :)
 
Fostex in general are a great speaker builder....I just listened to a set of fostex full range with thier super tweeter in a transmission line enclosure and they sounded fantastic. I have yet to listen to the backloaded horn setup but I'm looking forward to it.

thier super tweeters run in the $250-500 range........each....

I would say if you get them at a reasonable $$ amount...go for it..

I heard them at CES '86 in Chicago. To me, they were one of the best sounding speaker systems at the show. Very nice mid bass, mid range.

They also had some larger ones there with 4 of those woofers. The woofers do not use edge surrounds. It is called an edgeless woofer, with an air gap between the styrofoam and the frame.

Bass was firm and solid.
 
Ok they are in the house!!! Man these are fantastic sounding speakers!!! Very real, solid bass and great soundstage. I am truly amazed. I'll post some pics tonight. I'm still experimenting with placement, treatment ect. so, it will be awhile before I post any serious reviews, but so far....so goooood!! :)
 
Note the woofer surround, or lack thereof. It doesn't have one in the conventional sense. Very unique driver and speakers. An acquaintance of mine has a pair. Excellent sound!
 
Never heard a fostex ribbon speaker, but I'm a big fan of their ribbon headphones. A little modding turns them into monsters!
