Found a dog

or rather, it found us...as I was walking my mutt last night, a big old yellow dog came running up to us, and unfortunately followed us home. It was an old male, with a gentle disposition, and seemed to have been somebody's house dog--no collar, but his neck hair was worn where one would've been.

I thought I had made somebody's day when I looked on CL and saw an ad for a missing dog from that very day--by golly the pic looked identical to the one I found, and the missing dog was about 10 miles away...but the lost dog was a female, and the one here is a male. Bummer.

So I've put up "found--dog" signs, and called the local vet and pound, but no luck finding this fellow's family yet.

I can't keep the old chap, it's everything I can do to keep one dog and cat in the household. I'm gonna wait till Friday and if nobody calls, reluctantly he goes to the pound. Though I realize the odds are against him at that point--unless he has a microchip in him, he's only got a couple of weeks to be claimed or adopted......

I almost suspect the worst: that his owner, for some reason, could no longer keep him, and so abandoned him at the local city park. Given that this is a small suburb, and there's no flyers posted anywhere looking for him, and nobody's contacted the pound to inquire about him--gee if my dog was missing, I'd be tearing up the streets looking for her.

Forgive my rambling, but it's amazing how these critters can affect us.

So when money permits, I guess I'd better microchip the dog and cat.

Microchip is a good thing for owners. :thmbsp: Please take him to a vet and have him scanned prior to dropping him at the pound (unless the pound has that ability too).

Me and you both... Like you, I imagine he was dumped. Sad how often this sort of thing happens.

Thanks for being a safe harbor for this old guy: You've done far more than most would have. If I may, and you're willing to go a few steps farther, allow me to make a suggestion. If you have a few minutes in the next days, ask around and see if there are any no-kill rescues that will take him in and search for a permanent home for him. My vet maintains a list of such shelters and a phone call to him is all it usually takes to get the ball rolling. If the shelter I volunteer for was closer, or if I had one more open slot for a foster I could do more to help; but unfortunately the distance makes it impossible.

I wish you and him the very best of fortune. Hopefully, there's a home out there that's ready to give him the love an old fellow like him so richly deserves.

Sh**. You've done everything possible. Gotta do what you gotta do. What about putting a free dog ad on CL? Is that unscrupulous, since he's not really your's? He might have a better chance of finding a new home on CL than thru the pound, though.

....if there are any no-kill rescues that will take him in and search for a permanent home for him. .

Unfortunately, there's only a few no-kill shelters in middle Tennessee and they are already full. On of their web sites it says they have to turn away 7 to 10 animals per week. What a tragedy.

If only people would spay or neuter their pets, as well as love them.

No doubt. The county I live in has less than 40,000 people in year round residency, yet the annual report from our local "pound" listed almost 4,000 dogs that were PTS last year alone. A staggering number considering that our rescue (one of two) fostered over 250 dogs, and the pound itself found homes for almost 500 animals.

Can you post a picture? Is he a Golden Retriever or a Lab? Is there a Pet finder's listing near you? There are Golden and Lab rescues near you. Pet finder's will, I think, work with any breed including us mixed......

This is becoming a bigger problem since people are loosing their homes and may have a time finding new housing the accepts pets.

Great news!!!! We think we have found the owner!!! Apparently the owner was from out of town and was getting gas at a gas station a few miles away when the dog jumped out of the back of truck. (The owner finally got the phone number of the local Animal Control and called them, and fortunately Animal Control had kept our number on hand).

I am so relieved this story can have a happy ending after all. I was extremely upset at the thought of taking the dog to be put down.

I'm really glad that this story is having a happy ending.

Bill, glad the dog was fortunate enough to find you and your good karma!

Your a kind soul, that dog missed his family I am sure. I am so happy to hear of a good ending to this.
