Found a McIntosh 5100 complete with full documentation, for $10

So I was out and about with my three year old running some errands when I randomly decide to stop by the local GW, just for giggles. I have literally never found anything worth a crap at our local store, I usually have to drive twenty minutes south in order to get anything decent. However today was a different day! While walking past the "furniture area" I happened to see a receiver sitting on top of a dresser with a big $9.99 sticker on it. When I got to the front I couldn't believe it when I saw "McIntosh" on the front panel. I was even more shocked to see a stack of all the original documents on top, including the quality test sheet and even a receipt for when the owner had it serviced and the back light bulb replaced. I snatched it quickly and checked out, to which the older gentlemen at the counter lamented that he had been eyeing it since it came in, saying that it powered up but they couldn't test anything beyond that. I figured even if it had issues it was worth it anyway.

When I got it home and hooked it up to my JBLs I was amazed that every function, switch, knob, and input worked, and worked well. Other than a very slight static when adjusting the volume (which seemed to go away the more I used it) it sounded spectacular. Other than a few blemishes to the cabinet, and some engraving on the right side (most likely the name of the owner) everything else is in great shape. I can't wait to see how it looks once I get it cleaned up!

With a cabinet no less.

Better leave an extra $20.00 in the collection basket next Sunday.

Good for you! Excellent reviews for this piece, and 45wpc is underrated as usual for those old heavyweights

No lie there, it pushes my 100w rms JBLs just as good if not better than my Yamaha 100w/rms receiver and the stereo separation is superb.

I couldn't believe at what all was there. I assume it must have been a sole owner to have retained all those documents as well. It feels so stolen at that price I almost want to donate to a charity to make up for it lol.

Congrats big time.

If I had found something like that at my local GW I'd by hyperventilating, shaking and staggering while going to the counter. They'd get suspicious, call the cops and I'd be cuffed and arrested for strange erratic behavior. They'd take the McIntosh out of my clutching hands while I'm screaming at the top of my lungs....MINE,.....MINE,......,MINE,...... and return it to the shelf and it'd be gone by the time I got out of jail.

Probably better off that I didn't find one.

That is exactly the reason I keep dropping in on the local GW's, in hopes of a megascore like yours. Ten bucks? That's ridiculous:eek2:. I have one of these that gets no use anymore but I'm having difficulty getting to the point of being able to pass it on. It's absolutely mint and the cabinet is excellent+. If it weren't for my descent into the tube rabbit hole I'd be using it right now. Congratulations on your find and I hope you enjoy the hell out of it. Here's a pic of mine.IMG_0520.JPG

What's ridiculous were the Logitech PC speakers twenty feet away for the same price :rflmao:. It has a really inviting sound to it, like you could listen to it all day long and never tire of it. Vocals in particular sound wonderful.

By "ridiculous" I of course meant that in the best way. This has inspired me to hook mine back up and listen to it some more, it isn't far off from my C22 and Fisher tube amp.

Oh absolutely, I was just detailing the parallel of the obscene pricing at GW. I was pretty shocked at how "tube-like" it sounded tbh. I love the aesthetics of it as well, the subtle green back light complements it so well.

I have to agree with you on both sonic quality and aesthetic beauty of these McIntosh pieces. Before I joined the vintage McIntosh club I was into 80's black Yamaha gear ( C80,M65,M45,various receivers ) I guess there's just no going back. I'm still hanging on to that gear too even though I hate that it's not getting used. I never would have been able to join the vintage McIntosh gear club if it weren't for a unbelievably ridiculous "scroe" that I happened upon. I got the original paperwork too.:beerchug:
