Been a lot of threads on model Six's as of late and they were one KLH model I still had not come across around here for my little collection (32, 23, 17, 24, five). This pair came up on CList here 2 days ago for $40 so I acted.
They are a mismatch of two that appear to be very early versions. One is the natural or blonde cabinet which appears to have been installed in a cabinet or some type of shelving (off-white paint on the edges and top). Looks like 12 ply. Serial number 2658.
The other has a walnut veneer and serial number 3818. At first I was puzzled as this 2nd one was 1/2" wider and taller than the blondy. Upon further inspection it appears the Walnut veneer is an added 1/4" veneer over top a 5 or 6 ply wood underneath. Not sure if this a KLH doing or aftermarket. There are small screws all around the inside edge of the front frame so I assume this is holding that piece on or similar. I have read quite a few of the Model Six and other KLH threads and don't recall this mentioned before, but I may have missed it. That front is cracked as witnessed with the blue tape holding that loose section on for now so I will be attempting to unscrew these at some point. It was originally very well done but is now pretty beat up with top layer pieces of that top veneer having cracked off in spots.
So those serial numbers for now tell me early (potentially very early) production, thus oil caps, sealed cabs and drivers etc.
Both work with sound coming from all 4 drivers. Have not turned them up yet and I will probably run them for a while at modest volume to give the old caps a little new energy before attempting to assess things. Don't know yet if the switches do much. Grilles are okay but not great. No badges. Surround sealing will probably be needed but I do not want to break into these quite yet. Will probably not try to go inside since likely oil caps unless of course there are noticeable sound issues. Hope the switches are okay in that regard.
