Calling Kevzep......Calling Kevzep....

Found an AU-999 at the thrift today in sad shape. Powers up but no sound. Found all 4 rail voltage fuses blown on the inside, and one speaker fuse. Replaced the fuses with the correct ones, and voila! music!

But it has a hiss on one channel. I want to rebuild this thing. But it has some crazy spaceship saucer looking transistors on the driver board. Never seen these before. Whats a good replacement for them?

And a recap is in short order.

Oh....and whats a thread like this without pics? Took this at the thrift with my cellphone.

Nice find! The saucers can be replaced with several different transistors. I'd get rid of them all.. and if you take it apart (or when) BE CAREFUL with the driver boards. The bias transistor is clipped into the heatsink, and if you're not gentle you can break the legs off of them.

There was a place that had replacements, but they were out of stock last i checked..so basically rare as "hen's teeth" as another ak'er said.

No worries here I come......:thmbsp:First do a google search (at the search options use the "search AK with Google) of AK and find those threads, like Toby's one and some of mine, find out what you can and then post your parts list, and we can fine tune it....
Tobys list might be better, because I live in New Zealand we have different availability of caps etc, I get Panasonic whereas if I lived in the USA I would probably use nichicon for example. Also the main Caps I used were Epcos BHC which I dont think are very common in the USA....
But certainly the MJE340/350 and the other transistors we used are common to most countries.....
Might be worth looking at the KSA and Zetex (I think from memory) substitutes Echowars uses too, I cant get them here in New Zealand without a $40 postage fee so I get whats available locally which happens to be the MJE's....

Then when we start your rebuild thread, I am very happy to help.....
Toby got into a bit of trouble with his rebuild, but we got him out of it, and he is the proud owner of a nice AU999.....

While I have been doing my G9000 re-cap, I have had the AU/TU999 in the bedroom system, which gets used every day.....nice to hear the old girl actually, nice little amp.....sounds quite good when its cranking a bit, when its at idling volume late at night it doesnt sound quite as good.....but its an amp I do like and i will never sell it.....

Nice find ! These are a great old unit, you'll enjoy it for sure when its all fixed, a keeper. :D
Cheers
Glen

Nice find. You should make us all envious and tell us what you paid for it!! LOL

The AU999 gets my vote as Sansui's best ever integrated. Better than anything before or since. I recently rebuilt another AU9500 and got the chance to closely compare them. The 9500 obviously has more power, but within it's capabilities, the AU999, to me, is more musical and utterly non fatiguing. With a couple of additions it can even have the low end of a big, powerful DC amp. I can have one playing all day in my shop and be just as happy with the sound at the end of the day as when I started.

When you get going, I'd like to suggest a couple things.

Interesting you say that Jim, I felt the same way comparing the 999 to the 9500.....
Hence I kept my 999 and sold the 9500.......

Finding everything for the re-cap should be easy. I think my thread has a full list. These are extremely simple amps. If I can do it without messing too much up, anybody can. I'm extremely happy with mine too...Not the most powerful thing in the world, but it's got a very nice sound to it. I wish I had some more efficient speakers..

After about 30 hrs of playing, the sound got even better.. so keep that in mind.
