I understand Frazier Super Midgets were standard issue on Lear Jets back in the day. Could be wrong, and a Frazier expert is welcome to set me straight. I collect pre-74 equipment and graduated High School in 1971. That should give you a general idea of the "Vibe". I have a number of Sansui 9090, Pioneer SX 1010, etc. but power my matched pair of 1968 "Super Midgets" with a lovely 1968 Realistic STA-65B (2x32 watts rms) receiver. The setup is very smooth, pleasant, and without listener fatigue. They are used exclusively for FM Classical music listening, and I am overjoyed with the presentation.
The "Super Midgets" in their Helmholtz resonator cabinets are quite nice, and can "transport me" to a place that larger, more expensive, speakers cannot. Frankly, they have "character", and my Wife (there it is) will not allow me to sell them. Like me, she seems "attached". They were acquired for $2.00 each, and for what I can see, come along very infrequently, but when they do, demand a premium. You Frazier collectors should give them a try, and find "space" for them if at all possible.
Recently, I've seen them go for around $200.00 to $300.00 per pair. Could I buy better speakers? Of course I could, but then, the "experience", and "Vibe" would be lost. You older guys know exactly what I'm talking about. We don't "NEED" any of this equipment, but sometime can reward ourselves with the personal experience as I have.. I had so much fun in my brand new 1971 Super Beetle , all dolled up with a Craig 8 track, "Power booster", with Oaktron 6X9's., and 5'" speakers in the doors. This was before "Power Amps" became popular, but thought I was in heaven. See, I just drifted off to that time, place, and am married to the girl who used to ride around in it with me. Everyone had the "Bread" tape, and maybe "Grand Funk Railroad".
Audio people become very "attached" to their equipment, and don't need anyone to judge their sentiment. I've always been impressed with the courtesy and respect between audio collectors, I could have a pair of 1,000 watt McIntosh mono blocks, on Khorns, but it won't take me anywhere.. I'm not telling you guys anything you don't know, but wanted to share my personal thoughts on the little "Super Midgets". It was difficult not to say "Warm", so I'll leave it there.
I'd say that if you find a matching pair for $50.00, or less, reward yourself. You deserve it. You that enjoy Classical, will enjoy them as I do. Completely acceptable bass, reasonable treble (12,000 hz). I will advise against getting drunk, sitting in a dark room, listening to Johnny Cash records, and calling old girlfriends to ask why they don't love you anymore. "Ron, I'm married, and have three children".. Here come those tears again. Don't ask me how I know. 3 indictments, no convictions, so I've got that going for me.
Another fine alternate is the AKAI Jetsound speakers. A single 4" driver, but exceptional resonance through a well constructed little folded horn style enclosure. A "Labrynith" if you will.
NOTE: please don't buy a pair thinking you can replace the drivers with Bose 901 units. IMHO, the Midgets soul will escape, and just become a pair of small wooden boxes.
This is my first post, so please forgive the rambling. I'll get a handle on it as I learn.
