Frazier Mark IV

Picked up a pair of these today. It has a 10" woofer and a maybe 3/4 " horn tweeter. Seems that one works and the other tries to work. One woofer seems to have the voice coil stuck - slight pressure and you can move it back and forth but not free enough to move when you put the music to it.

Any ideas how to proceed with this woofer? You can tell that it wants to play for the short time I tried to play it.

Will try to get some pics in the morning.

EDIT: No need to respond to my question. I would tell you how I fixed the woofer but I would have to use the term "hammer" which is probably heresy when you are talking about voice coils!!!

This pair of speakers has a lot of promise. Managed to listen to them now for about 30 minutes. Very nice - couldn't help but smile while I listened.

Got some pictures so I will try to get them posted very soon.

Here's some pics of the Fraziers.

The cabinets seem pretty well built and have wood veneer. Will need some work to get them looking good. And that cap will probably need to be replaced. And the L-pads need a good cleaning.

Like your avatar -- went to UT Austin for graduate school.

Not too many Frazier owners on AK, and not too much info on the web IME. An unsung, but very well done speaker from TX, and people who know about them fight to the death for them on eBay <G>.

I came into a pair of Mark Vs a year or so ago. Cabs are real wood with black walnut veneer and built to last. My Mark V have twin-midrange speakers. PWK and Jack Frazier were technical buds and real believers in horn-type speakers. The Mark V vent out to the back, vs. how your IV go through the front.

Definitely worth keeping -- as good as Klipsch speakers of the same type, and some consider them superior. Will try to attach a couple of pics of my Mark V taken with a cell phone camera.

Hey abpeep,

I own a pair of Frazier Dixielanders and I really like them. I had 2-pair and like a moron, I sold one of them. One of those audio moves I regret making.

The woofers are similar I think but mine have a top mounted horn with a back loaded woofer set-up. I would hang onto them, they have some history.


J. Frazier had a interesting connection with JBL also along with Quam Nichols.

Thanks to both of you for the info.

I have listened to these for a very short time - in the garage, no less - but I am very, very impressed with how they sound. Wish I had my Heresys here to compare but they are at my son's house - I haven't heard them in at least a couple of years. These things are liable to take the place of my BA A150's for a while so I can get a good listen. That is something that no other speaker I have has compelled me to do since I got the A150's. Can't say right now that they sound better, but the grin I've had on my face when listening to them says I have to give them a chance.

Me too! Me too! I just purchased a pair of Frazier IV speakers and I'm looking forward to both your opinions on them and mine actually arriving. Then we can swap lies with each other and make everyone else envious and drive the price of Fraziers up... :D
 
Saw those earlier. Looks like we don't have to worry too much about driving the price up as a pair went for big bucks last week on ebay.

I like these a lot, so far.

Got the caps I ordered yesterday for the Fraziers. Opened one of them up find there is a reason the horn doesn't seem to be sealed - it's not original. Has a Radio Shack horn in there and while the mounting holes seem to be the same, the opening is not routed quite large enough. No wonder it was tilted up slightly - I thought it would just need the nuts tightened up to pull it in at the bottom.

Started to pull it out and the damn thing will not come through the opening no matter the angle. So how the hell did it go in. The slot is cut to allow the driver to come through but is just a hair too small. Anyway, I will have to open the other one - it was open before and I don't think the horn said Radio Shack - to see what identifiers are on that (likely) unobtainium horn.

Despite the RS horn being unsealed, I have listened to these a lot and they could definitely be a preferred speaker in alot of systems.
