Frazier vs VOTT?!?

Frazier X-15 Speaker cabinets / pair - $160

For sale is a pair of Frazier X-15 speakers only. These are the equivalent to the old EV voice of the theater cabinets. These were widely used in movie theater in '50s and '60s. The cabinets are in good shape and the speakers both work. (we think the drivers both work, but hard to tell with internal crossovers.) Bands in the '60s started using cabs like these for live sound applications, for which they worked well. These were pretty heavy duty in their day...... we have not tested at max volume.... so we'll sell as is.

I know how great Frazier stuff is... but, is this model really like the old VOTT speakers, or is it more like one of the 70's or 80's Peavey-style "rock and roll" sound reinforcement cabs?!? Has anyone heard them before?

Those were sold strictly for sound reinforcement applications, but as with any big cabinet, someone will try them in their garage or home setup.
 
I was thinking on the patio, then I'd get rid of my single VOTT a7... Or, at least make it the center channel between these two!
 
The bottom halves are very capable.

I can take about 5 minutes of those Atlas paging horn drivers. After that, i won't need to hear them again for at least a couple years.

Eminence or Selenium horn drivers would be a big improvement and extend the HF nicely for not much coin.
 
You think the stock horn is too harsh? I'm planning to put them on a covered patio where I currently have a single VOTT.

They suffer all the caveats of that style paging horn driver. I don't consider them a true compression driver in that they radiate a forward wave from the convex side of the diaphragm.

Jack had the PWK curse in that he didn't like to spend a lot of money on components.

OTOH, he was quite serious about his box designs, and i think on this model he came about as close to infringing on patents as a person could without inviting litigation. This design appears to borrow a good bit from the RCA LC-9A design. They're really a far departure from a VOTT despite first appearances. The VOTT uses a much more constrained throat, and longer horn path. This is responsible for part of the heavily forward midrange and heavy dynamic slam/attack of the VOTT. The Fraziers will play flatter across the LF bandwidth, it should give a better balanced presentation albeit at the cost of a bit of dynamics.

For myself, i'd not even wire a pair up until i had a true 1 inch throat horn and compression driver onboard in which case i think they could be a substantial hifi speaker.

Just my .02 of course............................

Keep lookin, you have geographic advantage where Fraziers are concerned.

I was a bit surprized to see the Altec 806's in them, not a huge improvement over the Atlas they'd later switch to. But, would make upgrading to an 802 or equivalent a snap.

I once got a broken Pioneer SX-1250 for free, didn't cost that much to fix either. The guy whose closet it had been in for a decade since his technician told him he needed a new receiver, insisted that it had tubes in it. Who was I to argue? :smoke:
