FREE Onkyo DX-702 CD Player

Today's free find, picture below. I've been on a roll with the free stuff - today I picked up an Onkyo DX-702 CD player (1991 sticker on the back) in excellent shape - it still had the plastic film over the display! Everything works perfectly; now I have a backup in case my Zero One CD-HD player ever needs service.

Anyone have any thoughts on this unit - good, bad or indifferent?

Congratulations! If it sounds good to you then it is indeed a good CD player. You should buy a lottery ticket today while your streak is hot :-)

Actually, what I like the best

about the DX-702 is that it has a built-in headphone amp and volume control, so I can use it as a stand-alone system when loud just won't do.
 
The DX-702 is a very nice player. It has a Sony KSS-210 laser pickup in it, which you can buy for about $20, so you can basically keep it running forever. It has 8X oversampling. If you replace the opamps in the output stage with better ones, it will sound simply amazing, like a much more expensive player. Search the forums, there is a post about one that I did for Fmueller, (and also my own player.) You got a great deal!

On the threads you pointed me to, you mention several opamps, and that you were planning to try them all out on the DX-702 and see which is best. Do you have a favorite among them? Any watch-outs on the upgrade?
 
So far I haven't tried any of the ones others have suggested, just LM833N, and the OP whatever it was, 2228? (I'm at work and don't have the number here.) Those 2 sound so good that I'm not motivated to try the others until I have another player to mod.:music:

By the way, I was just in Cleveland last week - very nice city! My son (14 years old) and I stayed at the Hampton Inn on E. 9th St in Downtown, and visited the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Browns Stadium, caught a game at Progressive Field (Indians versus Angels - Indians won 3-2) and stopped by Browns training camp in Berea, where my son snagged 16 autographs from the Browns players.
I was impressed by the city and its inhabitants - very nice folks.
 
Hmmm... I think that I have one of those with a bad laser... only $20 to replace the laser? :scratch2:
