Believe it or not, that was the Natural. No tinting involved in that color change. I started out with an old can of "Satin" finish Watco, so old that the "Natural" is the current equivalent. That quickly ran out and my neighborhood hardware store luckily stocked Watco. The whole cabinet "restoration" took less than one day, not including the re-surrounds (one at at time on those for a total of two days).

I used normal yellow fiberglass home insulation from some leftover scraps. Seems to match exactly what JBL used in the cabinet. In keeping with your acquisition, my batting was free and came with no shipping cost, either.

Did you also add the port extension. How noticeable do you think the upgrade improved the speakers sound.

I bought them as a project when I just happened to see them while picking up a motorcycle 400-miles away. Tossed them in the truck. Never played them before the mods since I did the GordonW stuff while I had the woofers out for re-surrounding.

I do have eleven other pairs of JBLs to compare them to and they aren't the worst of the bunch! There's no issue with the bass so if that's the purpose of the mods, they work well. I'm thinking of installing L-pads to tame the titanium tweeters though. Meantime, I just make sure to play them with the grilles on.

The extra resistor in the HF section of the network you may also find mention of is to bring it in-line with L80T3 specs.

I've done one pair with 1.5" extension, one with 2" extension, for my own use, and a few for others each way. Both worked well. It can depend on what room they're in, which one works better. Also, it can depend on how much damping you add... more damping, less port length needed, and vice-versa.

The L80T3 is an absolutely fabulous speaker. The revised crossover gives almost perfect tonal balance, IMHO. Not that the L80T was bad... but on some amps, it could be a little bright. Not enough to deter me from liking it a lot, though!

Is it practical to modify the L80T crossover for this more balanced sound?

Zilch recommended adding .5mh inductor to the tweet to rolloff the UHF, but I have found that on the stands, in a larger room with the grilles on I'm not bothered by the >20khz response.
