Fuse fatigue?

Now that's an interesting thought.
I'm imagining dissimilar metals with current going thru them and "spoty" contact to begin with. By definition, a circle with a bump in it means most of the circle won't come in contact.
But I am just spitballing.
 
The typical cylindrical glass with metal end caps type of fuse can get resistive due to oxidation of the fuse material. This causes the connection between the fuse material and the end caps to become ohmic. They may look like they are sealed but they are not. The end of the fuse material is usually folded over the end of the glass tube and the end cap is jammed over it for a connection. I've had several fuses that were in service a long time do this. Best thing is to check them with an ohmmeter. I think the automotive blade type fuses are more reliable for this reason.
 
That makes sense. If the fuse holder isn't robust, with great contacts, those $100+ "super fuses" may not help ... if, in fact, they really do work as claimed. Can anyone point to info regarding how expensive hi-fi fuses achieve their superiority. I'd imagine they'd have to have less resistance to current flow, but I'm not sure how that might be accomplished.

I fix industrial metal working machines. Once in a while I troubleshoot a machine and find a blown fuse or tripped circuit breaker. Replace the fuse or reset the breaker and if I can, I'll measure the current to see if it's in spec. If there is a real problem it usually blows the fuse or trips the breaker when I power back up. I even check the cabling for that circuit if it goes outside of the control box for cut insulation, etc that can cause a short. Sometimes there is no reason, it's just a random fault or what I call a "nuisance fault". I rarely hear back about the issue.

We assume that fuses are able to take their rated current. I submit that there's variation in their actual performance. Some may blow at the right time, some early and some late.
