Futterman OTL 3 w/ upgrades

I've gone down the OTL rabbit hole in a big way. Part of it is just chance; some amazing pieces from estates came available in my area at the same time. I have another thread on the original, first produced H3aa monoblocks. These are a different beast altogether. Advertised at 200 wpc into 8Ω!

If you don't know the history, it's fascinating. Julius Futterman was in the Army Signal Corps (like Saul Marantz). In 1958 he invented a tube amp that used horizontal sweep tubes instead of transformers as the output device(s). He built and licensed them in several configurations until his death in 1981. After that, Harvey Rosenberg bought the rights, revised the circuits, and marketed them under New York Audio Labs as the Julius Futterman OTL. There was OTL 1 through 4. Rosenberg died untimely, NYAL died, and the Futterman legacy struggled.

One person kept it alive somewhat: George Kaye, who had been the engineer at NYAL. He hung out his own shingle repairing and modifying NYAL (which included the Moscode line) and Futterman gear. George was also a bassist of some renown. He unfortunately passed last year, and I have these from his estate. They started life as OTL-3s from NYAL (stamped on the xformer). In 2004 Kaye launched a premium upgrade package for the OTLs, which these received. He did that for quite some time; don't actually know when, or if, he stopped before he died. So the pair that I have is from somewhere on or after 2004.

These are large and very heavy. Each channel has:
  • 10x 6KG6A output tubes
  • 2x 5814A
  • 6EJ7
  • 6SN6
  • 9x 1200µf 450V
  • 4x 2000µf 450V

George Kaye did not share the schematic for his upgrades, and the person handling the estate isn't getting to his papers anytime soon. So that will be a bit of a challenge. Luckily these seem to be in pretty good shape, with a couple of exceptions. Here's what the Wayback Machine got from George's Web site about the upgrade:

  • CONVERSION to the EL509 output tube.Since the 6LF6 12 pin output tube was discontinued the supply of NOS (new old stock) has become pitifully small and what is left are generally unreliable and unmatchable. What is left are mostly returns from earlier replacement and production run purchases. I've not had good luck finding any suitable stock. SO in order to keep your cherished amplifier up to date and running I am offering a conversion for most amplifiers to the EL509. The EL509 is virtually electrically identical to the 6LF6 except that it is a 9 pin base and thus requires a different socket. The EL509 is in current production and on the market at considerably cheaper prices than the 6LF6. This also makes it much easier to find a matched set.
  • RUNS COOLER AND IS MORE RELIABLE. The big output tubes are now in the rear - NEXT TO THE FAN!- where they belong. The FRONT END circuitry is sheilded from the heat for long component life.
  • CHASSIS DAMPING MATERIAL: We add chassis damping material and shock mount the power transformer for resonance free quiet operation. The circuit board and fan are mounted on elastomer energy absorbing shock mounts.

OTL1 Style Regulation​

  • The OTL1 (pictured below on this page) is the 4 chassis flagship of the NYAL OTL Series. It used an outboard B+ power supply that incorporated 12 transistors, 2fans, a separate power transformer and filter bank. It was a Gizmological wonder but they failed way too often and wasted much power in the form of heat.
    Now because of the tremendous improvement in the efficiency of the output stage it is possible to incorporate a high reliability regulator inside the OTL3 chassis that will give the Audible Dimensional Stability of the OTL1 without the extra 75 lbs of weight per channel. This additional circuitry can quite simply be installed as part of your upgrade for an additional fee. The benefits include:
  • Lower heat per output tube for longer life.
  • Tighter Bass,
  • More Stable Imaging and Soundstage.

Totally OT from these, but if you hear anything about docs from the estate, I'd love anything that exists for the Moscode preamps. I have a Minuet in A and nothing seems to exist. I have a very poor quality schematic for an original Minuet but those don't even run the same tubes.

IIRC I had a Dynaco ST70 driver board that George Kay designed long ago.

I will absolutely do that. I'm keeping in touch with the guy running it. Right now he's focused on selling the inventory -- he has Minuets at a very reasonable price. Feel free to PM me for details if you're interested. I can pick up and ship since he's strictly local pickup. But he's said he might get to the papers "later this year". So I'll circle back to him every so often. I have a vested interest since I want papers on his OTL upgraded circui!
 
Not really sure I need or want another but I appreciate it. I was offered a regular Minuet and I admit I considered it for about 5 minutes before remembering how much of a PITA mine was to fix, and decided I really don't need two of that in my life. Mostly I'd just love to come into documentation to possibly keep it alive longer if needed. If this thing dies beyond fixing though, I'm probably going to replace it with something different just for the sake of a new experience.

Congratulations for your acquisition - and also good luck in the challenge to make them work as expected - because I suppose that they need at least some cleaning, inspection and servicing, if not troubleshooting of some issues...

I also hope that you will get soon all the required documentation about these big OTL amps : this will ease the challenge ! I would be somewhat puzzled without that, personally...

My DIY U-OTL are tiny in comparison, with 20X less power output (10WRMS/16R) and a compact size...

Congratulations for your acquisition - and also good luck in the challenge to make them work as expected - because I suppose that they need at least some cleaning, inspection and servicing, if not troubleshooting of some issues...

I also hope that you will get soon all the required documentation about these big OTL amps : this will ease the challenge ! I would be somewhat puzzled without that, personally...
