Ok, so I'm likely getting my Ariston RD110 SL back soon with a Fidelity Research FR-24 Mk2 tonearm fitted after a full professional set up and service. I'm very much looking forward to hearing it for the first time.

While I did know that many parts in this table were interchangeable with a Linn LP12 I had no idea of the number of upgrades that were available for the LP12.

Turns out the springs in this have already been upgraded by the previous owner to new black Linn springs so that won't need doing.

A little reading indicates that the power supply in the table is equivalent to a Linn Basik, so not particularly well thought of. I'm rather interested in whether a new PSU is really necessary to get the best of this table. Are the upgrades merely different, or actually better?

Is a new motor worthwhile? Have the new motors improved over the old?

Anyways, any input is greatly appreciated guys :)

Well you are asking very specific questions about a rather rare deck so maybe no one can contribute first hand experience.

I will offer this: if you get the deck back and you spend a few months listening to it and you find yourself bothered by the issues presumed to be caused by the power supply then by all means replace it but I'm guessing you won't be.

Besides you might find some other aspect or component of your system deficient and deserving of your time and money.

And it might be just fine the way it is.

Some good advice there really. Not so sure about my speaker choice in that system.... Though I have my eye on some nice and efficient 102db Coral speakers ;)

Still, I'll be keeping the PSU upgrade in mind.
 
I for one am looking forward to your impressions of the table after the work is done. I wouldn't get carried away with any changes until your ears have had a chance to get a really good impression.
 
Yes, the arm boards were cut for it yesterday from rosewood. With any luck they'll do the trick and I'll get it back over the weekend. Otherwise more work will need to be done. The round arm board on the Ariston has apparently made the Fidelity Research FR-24 Mk2 tonearm only barely possible on this. I think Linn's arm boards seem to make more sense based on this experience. Here's the trial run with the original arm board.

Not that I can tell. I had heard that Premotec has improved the motors over the years though
with the motor running, belt off, go around the table with a stethoscope and see if you can hear the motor noise breaking through anywhere. You should be able to hear it in the suspension studs, and any other place that is metal to metal contact with the motor.
improvement over the years, I'm guessing is in vibration/noise. not sure you can make 250RPM any better than 250RPM
 
Hmmmm, isn't that the whole idea of a suspended platter and belt anyway? To isolate vibration..... Not sure it even makes sense to replace the motor now unless it has a failure.

yes, but the motor is bolted directly to something......and that something contains the suspension studs, and the suspension studs hold the springs which contact the subchassis, and the main bearing well is part of that, and the arm board also is attached to the subchassis, and the subplatter rides in the main well..........lots and lots of ways for motor energy to enter into the arm and platters. I'm usually up to my elbows in suspended belt drives finding ways to cure a little of this, and a little of that. A customers table I have here at the moment has a motor that produces a lot of energy into the subchassis via the route I mentioned. has a pretty good rendition of internal motor noise coming out of my speakers as soon as the rock drops. So, back to my comment about "new and improved" vs "old and lousy",
not sure other than noise and vibration what improvements have been made. If yours isn't adding any noise into playback, and you get 33.3, not sure what you can improve.
 
Once I get it back I'll see if I can check that out for sure. I'm hoping I get to play with it this weekend, otherwise it will be the following weekend. I'm seriously itching to play with this. The whole process of getting the table, then arm, then getting it fitted has been over a few months. I'm accustomed to getting a ready built product and using it straight away with just a shipping delay.... The wait is killing me!
 
Yes, the design was done with a 9" arm in mind and the FR is a bit longer. Looks like it will work out, though. BTW is the motor in these AC or DC?
An AC motor in these. Going to run off the wall initially. Have a few system changes to fund before I save for a better power supply for this though it may not even be necessary.

As you might (or might not) be aware I am in the process of working up a PS design with my tech that could go into limited production if we get enough interest. The design would have considerably greater current handling capacity than what is on the market so far. The plan at any rate...
 
I guess it would primarily come down to cost/performance ratio for me. A fellow over at Stereonet has almost convinced me that the Phoenix Falcon is the way to go. It's small and easy to hide, and the Roadrunner addon down the track promises to perfect the speed on the table..... I could do a bit at a time.

Do you have a thread on your PS design? I wouldn't mind taking a look though I may not actually understand what's said.... What is the benefit of greater current handling? Sorry for the silly questions.
