HELP: tv interference pictures, ever seen this ?

Pictures are worth a thousand words.

Zillions of little speckles in a band rolling UP across the picture(s).

Has ANYBODY else seen anything like this, or know what is is.
OR know who I can ask (besides the FCC) that may have some idea?

My broadcast channels 2 , 11 and 23 at 3 pm today, and most other days too, good days hit channels 2 through 11, at best it's still on channel 2.

It isn't in my house, I've operated the tv off of a battery/inverter,with rabbit ears and the house's main breaker thrown, and it's still there.

This interference IS LOCKED to the powerline phase. It takes between 16 to 17 seconds to roll up across the picture. Assuming Color TV broadcast's vertical frequency of 59.93904 Hz and a local powerline frequency of 60 Hz , that gives a beat frequency of 0.060952 Hz or a period of 16.406 seconds, so BINGO..



The other two pictures are taken of older spectrum analyzers at 3:15 pm or so and at 5:30 or so today. The fuzzy one is the interference earlier in the day and the cleaner one is more like the way things should be.

Starting in the middle, it shows the tv video and fm audio carriers of channel 2 (54-60 mhz), the channel 3 (60-66 mhz) digital tv broadcast ( "2.1" on the dtv), the empty channel 4 (66-72 mhz), the 72-76 mhz gap, then the channel 5 (76-82 mhz) video and fm audio carriers, the empty channel 6 (82-88 mhz) and then that "comb" type stuff at the end is the 88 - 108 mhz fm broadcast band! That REALLY tall spike in the fm band is a strong FM station around 90 Mhz.

The heck with auctioning off the analog vhf bandwidth, they're already using it!!!


Edit: FYI that scan is from 1 to 110 megahertz off of a roof antenna, although a several foot length of wire gives similar results.

channels 7 tthrough 11 is 174 to 204 Mhz, ch 23 is at 524 mhz, ch 32 is at 578 mhz!!!!

The interference is finally explained, even though the actual sources are still unknown.

This interference was caused by high frequency switching power supplies.

The width of the band is proportional to the load being drawn at the time, and of course the band is locked to the powerline frequency. These supplies DO exhibit some good operating frequency stability, even though it (or they) are splattering way into the hundreds of megahertz region. Must have some daM fast rise times... and radiating like a Tesla coil.

BUT they're NOT in my house, I did a battery operation of the tv, with the main breaker for the house shut off, with NO change in the received interference.
 
that looks like it's the HV inside the set is arcing or leaking to ground or something else inside the set,that is what usually gives the "sparkles",in other words tons of micro static sparks floating around,you may even hear a "hiss" from the back area,I had a sony with a bad flyback that did that exact same thing..the insulation breaking down and HV leaking onto something else inside the set..
 
That's right, but in this case, not only is it showing up on four different sets, but both my spectrum analyzers are getting it with just 24 inches of wire hanging in the air. Granted, I wasn't operating THEM off of batteries, but I rotated through the sets many times over the past year or so, including recording it on VCR's with NO tv (HV) operating.

BUT this DOES give me a thought, about hv leakage in the POWER LINE out back..... I'll just have to wait for a power failure to test THAT hypothesis.

But there IS a repetitive pattern to them when a vcr recording is advanced frame by frame, and persistence of vision is not a factor. Someday I may sit back and calculate the intervals / repetition frequency off the freeze frame.
