G-33000!!!

tobyj17

Comfortably Numb
Thought I'd share my new to me G-33000!

I must say, this thing belongs in a museum. There's not a dent, a scratch, or a flaw hardly anywhere on it! I got a really good price on it too.. Why?? Because one channel was out. It seemed strange, because if i turned the tuner on or sent a signal into the AUX only the right channel would work. Send a signal into tape 1 or 2 and both channels worked flawlessly. Hmm..

After about 5 hours of cleaning, tracing signal paths, deoxing, and studying the service manual I managed to track down the problem. The selector switch. Checked with my meter..and sure enough. There's a little rod inside there that turns all the components, (see pic) and that was not turning, but the switch was still clicking in it's proper locations. At this point I'm thinking oh great now I'm gonna have to track down one of these things. For kicks I decided to push on the end of it.. and it snapped back into place! I should have been a little more observant when I was deoxing this thing.. I should have noticed that. But.. at least It's done.. and singing away! It doesn't even break a sweat powering my Vega's..it truly is a beast.

It's healthy too, I checked the Bias and offset too. 19 MV and 14 MV for bias , and -6 and +4 for offset. Probably wouldn't have needed to adjust them but I was already there.

The problem now is I've found my holy grail. I've got nothing else to seek and search for. Guess I'll enjoy the feeling.. because next week I'll probably be onto something else :D

I think you got your offset and bias(idle current) confused.

Real nice piece of gear. You'll have to update your signature now!:thmbsp:

I owned one of them babies from new at one time. Sad to say I sold it and continue to kick my A$$ for doing it!! You have in your hands the best(and nicest looking) peice of equipment ever made!! I my opinion anyways!! The thing that sold me on it way back when I bought it was you could move the radio dial all the way to the left.....and with a quick flick of the wrist watch the dial go allllllll the way to the right......all by itself.....LOL Funny how some little weirdness could sell me the best reviever I ever owned!! I have now made it back into the line with a G8000. Nothing even close to the 33 but it kinda gives me that *look*.......LOL Enjoy!!! You will never be not satisfied!!!!

Dale

Nice work Toby, you must be really happy with this, I had a feeling it was going to be something simple........
What a great feeling to reach your goal and have the King of the Big G's!!!!

Now crank that sucker up!!! I wanna hear it down here in New Zealand.......:thmbsp:

Very nice. I saw a G-22000 in person the other day, and was truly amazed at it's size. It dwarfed the guys G-9000.

I may get a chance to work on it soon.

Rob

You can't appreciate the size until you see one in person. Congrats on the 33.

What a great piece of Sansui history. Glad to hear it was a simple fix. Later Rick

If it makes you nervous having a Monster at your place you can always send it to me, heck, I'll even pay the shipping.....:banana::banana:

There's only two things that are nervous.. my speakers and my ears :D

Thanks for the congrats guys, There's no way i'd ever get rid of this thing.
I did manage to get it to go into current protect once, it was a low note and the meters pegged themselves past the 600 watt mark! Now that I know what the limit is, I'll be staying far away from that and enjoying a LOT lower listening volumes. I'd cry if I burnt something out!

Jeez Toby, nice work, good to see you making the most out of the King Of the G's ?? Those Meters wouldnt even show the true peak output level.......which would have been many times what it displayed........whoah!!!!!!

Perhaps in a few sentences you could describe what it was like in the same room at that level........

Of course all this coming from someone who has a 5000watt amplifier on his subs :D

but still over 300watts of full range signal pumping into a pair of speakers in a domestic situation is fairly impressive.....

CONGRATULATIONS! :thmbsp:

Sorry to shout, but it's a long way from Hong Kong to Wisconsin (Go Pack, Go! :D), and I wanted to be sure you heard me. Plus, a G-33000, especially one in great condition for a cheap price, is worth shouting about. I've seen two G-22000s for sale locally in the past couple of weeks alone, but haven't seen a G-33000 for a few years -they are truly rare and special beasts, and you're a very lucky guy, to own one!
