G-6000

Received the G-6000 I purchased on Ebay. In much better condition than I ever hoped for. I've been running it for 3 days, everything works, sounds great. Only problem it obviously came from a smoker & it smells up the whole room. I really don't want to have to tear it down when it has no issues. Any suggestions?

Have you tried plugging in a Glade air freshener in the switched outlets on the back?

I know the problem well. I've learned to ask firsthand before bidding. It makes a HUGE difference. I figure with all the info out there about the dangers of smoking and alternatives to quitting that anyone who continues to smoke regardless is potentially suicidal (in the process of killing themself) and I don't want anything from them.

You could send it to me:yes:

Gary - Nice try!!! It sounds like he really LOVES it, except for the smell. If there's some way to eradicate that.....I'm sure it's going nowhere. Or, cross your fingers, maybe he'll figure if this is so nice imagine what a G-9000 would be like? G-6000s don't flip for much, so, maybe as an act of generosity, in anticipation of getting a G-9000, you could get it after all.

I had a cheapo Kenwood amp that was coated in oily nicotine (imagine what the guy's lungs look like...). I unloaded a whole can of contact cleaner on the boards and flushed the thing out. It doesn't smell anymore. I'm sure this is not the recommended way of doing things. Certain receiver components like the tuner section shouldn't be treated this way.

I'm glad they don't go for much I have no plan to sell mine. I did pass one up this Summer for less than $65, but it seems they are going up as the year progresses.

Maybe Terry DeWick could give you some advice on how to clean up the nicotine smell from your G-6000. Maybe using 409 and a toothbrush around the PCBs would be the only possible way, and mild dishwashing soap with warm water for the chassis and cabinet.

I know what you're going through...my bro bought a pair of '70s Realistic Minimus-5 walnut veneered speakers for a project last year. The original owner failed to mention in his eBay auction that he was a chain smoker all his life and that the little enclosures were literally covered with a fine layer of grimey, sticky nicotine...the smell would make you sick as we inspected them and took them apart for cleaning (and my brother, who smoked for 14 years and had quit several years ago, almost gagged at the smell while scrubbing them down with Dawn dishwashing soap). Everything cleaned up well and the odor pretty much disappeared, but the slats used on the horns were nearly impossible to clean completely and remained somewhat gooey feeling up to the time when he later sold them.

Unplug it (very important!), open it up, clean with alchohol swabs and alcohol (Simple Green works too, but dunno if it really should be on the guts or not), let THOROUGHLY dry, run it for a while, and repeat. A few times.

I betcha you'll get 90%-95% of the smell gone.

The 6000 that my friend Rod has is one of the nicest receivers I've ever heard. It was so well loved, that it remained thee go-to receiver for all our speaker auditions here at the mini AK New England fest.

Another product to help with the smell is Odor Gone. I'm a smoker but not in the house or around my daughter. When I come into the house after a smoke I spray some on my clothes and it eliminates the odor on contact. You could pull the case and wipe down as much as you dare. As Paul said: MAKE Sure it's unplugged first!
