GAMMA 30 experiement

There probably aren't that many folks making ribbons from scratch. I've done it in the past and it's fun but tedious. I think your method of corrugating the ribbon with ribbon cable is clever. I never had a good way to do it when I was building them, but then my ribbons were three feet long and made of foil strips on kapton tape so they didn't take the corrugating as easily anyway.

Probably not, I agree I also think many people find it to be too much of a hassle, or maybe doubt their ability to make good ribbons.

Sure it takes practice, but is easily worth the effort.
I'd like to see a dome tweeter last as long as a ribbon tweeter, in the end it all comes down to serviceability, the ribbon is much easier to replace, then re-foaming, 're-doming' a dome tweeter, with planar or ESL it must be close to impossible.
Maybe you'll spend a weekend once in a rare while, making ribbons, but a good set should last years if you don't blow them.

With short ribbons such as the GAMMA VLD-12/13, or the DACCA DK30/London it's not too hard once you learn how to handle the delicate ribbon.
I can even move my ribbons from tweeter to tweeter, thanks to the silver paste which never dries completely.

For long ribbons, this is needed:

I have seen variations of this device on the bay, if you make a sort of guide, that forces the ribbon to enter this device at a right angle, you should be able to make ribbons as long as you like.
Maybe you could build the guide of cardboard.

How did get foil strips on to kepton tape, DIY or prefabricated?
That would make a kind of mylar, I would like to experiment with mylar type ribbons.
 
I slit regular aluminum foil with a straight edge so I had strips of about 3mm wide and manually applied them to the 1/2" wide kapton tape. You can buy the tape in rolls. It was a relatively massive ribbon, so the sensitivity was somewhat low, but they sounded nice.

My guess is they worked better in the midrange then at high frequencies, so not well suited for super tweeters?

That probably means too much output 5-7kHz, one way or another.

In that range I have no issues, the problem area is 2500-3400Mhz, I have solved that problem, mostly.

Without good measurements to look at, it's pretty hard for anyone else to say anything about a project like this.

I have asked some fundamental questions, that are not specific to my speakers.
But it's probably all for the better, I have done a LOT of research, if I just got the simple answer I probably wouldn't have.

A lot of what I write are just thoughts, no one could know what would happen if I hooked up the B110 rather then BK3013A fx I do wonder and I should try it, but if I like it I'd be in trouble.
 
The ClarityCaps have arrived and they are gargantuan!
Maybe the Mundorf M-Caps make good ribbon material, and I have tree types to chose from, lets see.

The ClarityCap ESA's have been installed and it's an instant improvement, and they should improve as they burn in.

I can now play the speakers as loud as I dare and they sound clear and controlled, no sharpness to be heard.

They are balanced in a very similarly to my K240DF's, I haven't used the DF's in over a week, as I wanted to get used to my speakers sound, and then return to the DF's and see what they sounded like.
To my surprise, they have a lot more in common then ever before.
 
Oh my WE HAVE BASS oh yeah!

The foil from the M-Caps can't be used for ribbons, they seem to be metalized film rather then film with foil on them.
 
I'm getting some 0.6mH 1.4mm coils for the low pass filter, to move the crossover point down a little.

Here are some measurements of the GAMMA LA1231 with AlNiCo magnets, very very similar to the BK3013A.

I turned my speakers baffle upside down and put the tweeter on top of the box, so now the setup is pretty much like it will be once they get rebuilt.

It's nice to have the drivers so close together, the bass far off the floor and the drivers in line.
 
Hmm should I mount the tweeter vertically as it's designed for, or horizontal as on this pic?
I'm unsure what would give the best horizontal dispersion, intuitively I'd think that would be horizontal orientation, but why would it be intended to be mounted vertically then?

The ribbon itself will have a narrower pattern on the long axis, i.e. the way you show it above it would have narrow horizontal dispersion. I don't know how the horn affects that, but I'm pretty sure you should leave it vertical.

Thanks vertical it is, it should also prevent the ribbons from sagging over time.
 
I'll probably mount the tweeters on the box using something like this (painted black or maybe the same color as the box, but that paint was expensive).
I think it would probably be best if I attach them the the box permanently, if a tweeter was to fall to the floor I'd have to get out one of my spares, and I want them to last me the longest time.

I have added a high quality 1.5uF 250v cap from the old GD-8500 crossover, in parallel with the 6.8uF cap in the low pass filter, for a total of 8.3uF.
It has reduced the peakiness around 3000-3200Hz, but changed little in the 2600-2800 area.

Still waiting for the 0.6mH coils, and will probably have to wait till Tuesday...

Edit: It's funny how reducing a peak in the upper mids/lower treble can make a speaker sound much more bassy.

Thanks for your interest :) I'll keep going until I'm done.
This might prove helpful to those who want to build a GAMMA 30 speaker, or for those who want to get in to speaker building or crossover tuning.
But what I'm really hoping for is to get more people interested in ribbons.
