Garage sale Grundig cubes!

I've been lusting after a pair of the old, spherical Audiorama speakers since I was stationed in Germany, back in the day.

A few days ago, I found something almost as good. Almost.

They looked to have been in the attic for a few years, but I couldn't pass them up.

I shoulda taken "befores" but I was so stoked that I just started cleaning all the dust off.

They sound pretty damned good!

One of the cubes was loose on the chicken-foot stand, so I had to open it up to tighten. The grilles are only held on with a few dabs of hot-glue but the speakers get 6 little screws, each..

The crossover is a wire wound resistor and a 25uF cap.
The individual speakers are closed back and wired in two groups of three.
With 6 speakers crammed in there, each cube weighs about 9 pounds.
The interior was absolutely packed to the gills with wool fiber. I had to pick it all out to get a good look inside.

No diagram yet, but stay tuned.

Tomorrow, I'll open up the woofer and post some more pics. Right now, I'm just happy to listen to them.

Before I forget...
The kicker to the whole deal?
They still had the original Europlug connectors on them.

The guy couldn't hook them up to anything to prove that they worked, so $25.00 for the set.
Shut up and take my money!

Those European din connectors. I have parts on order to keep things original. Its easy to just cut that wire and modernize. I dont think cutting will effect the value.

Haven't tried the solution I came up with as parts are coming eventually. Its a female din to lil piggies

I remember hearing them in a shop in the Denver area (Cherry Creek) back in the mid '70's. I had forgotten what brand they were, but do recall being very impressed with the sound. Nice find.

Here's where being a pack rat comes in handy.

I've got a box of electronic junk in the basement. (Neatly organized, thank you)
Wire, banannas and two old Euro connectors I salvaged 20+ years ago.
Never thow nothin' away.

Those are so cool, I'm glad you didn't cut the connector, I have a feeling they are worth some pretty good money just for the art-modern look alone. Being Grundig doesn't hurt either, I wonder what the components for the series looked like, maybe similar to Braun?

AFAIK, this is the complete set for the cubes. The wooden box woofer is what they sold in the 1970's.
They also made a series of spherical speakers, floor standing and ceiling hanging models.
