Garrard 3000 Mechanical Issues

Hello All!

I'm currently working on restoring a KLH model 24 (uses a Garrard 3000 as the turntable), and have run into an odd problem involving the auto change feature. When I attempt to drop a record from the spindle the tone arm lifts, the record drops, the tone arm immediately sets back down into the cradle and then the player shuts off. This is particularly confusing to me seeing as the auto/reject mechanism works fine when the overarm is not in use and I place the record directly on the platter.

So far I have attempted the usual (and much needed) cleaning and regreasing of the cam and trip pawl, but it seems to make no difference. Everything seems to be running smoothly there, but perhaps its not clean enough?

Any insight as to what else could be causing this issue, and hopefully how to remedy it will be greatly appreciated!

There is a mechanical sensor in the back that senses whether the overarm is up or down. This tells the mechanism whether to play or shut off. Something in that overarm sensor circuit is still not moving freely. Actuate it from underneath with your finger and you may be able to see what's happening.

yeah, that operates off a lever that contacts the bottom of the overarm. When the overarm is down all the way, it goes into shut-down mode rather than record cycle mode. I don't recall the at6 family over-arm having set screws to connect it to the rod that runs down through to contact the finger, but that might be worth looking at. I had those issues on a V-M changer that were simply loose screws. The arm had moved on the rod, so the changer "thought" the arm was all the way down to indicate an empty stack when it still had 1 record on.
 
Thanks for pointing me in the right direction, your insight has helped me diagnose the real issue. Its definitely a problem with the overarm itself. The arm does not hold the records in the proper horizontal position as they wait on the spindle, and thus the arm spindle rides too low and triggers the shut off. havent yet found an easy way to adjust the arm/spindle to bring it back to working order. What fun wrestling with this one!
 
I'm glad you found that. I've also found that the records must sit level in order for the 45 adapter to work properly, too. So I hope you find a way to get it straightened.
