I recently have been listening on my Marantz 2238 / Garrard GT 55. The sound is good IMO. I think that there may be a cold solder joint in my receiver ( one side will cut in and out regardless of FM/PHONO) after playing for a while it will stay on and function pretty well. However that is besides the point. The Garrard is old and I am not sure how old the cartridge is or even if it is still in good shape. How would I know if it is bad? Also, How would I go about finding something that would fit this model? Does anything still exist in terms of replacements for it?

usually you can just replace the stylus. What cartridge is it?

Possible the controls need to be cleaned on the Marantz. The tape monitor switches are good for causing random channel issues, so maybe jiggle that next time it happens.
