Garrard Type A Clean-up Questions

1. Does anyone have a safe recommendation for a substitute foam material under my Garrard turntable platter? The original material has pretty much turned to dust. Alternatives?

2. Any suggestions on cleaning up the metal non-painted parts?

I have the same problem!

I see someone on ebay was selling replacements but I'm skeptical it would make a difference as I only use mine for mono playback.
