Garrard Zero 100 S auto stop stopped working

Hello everyone,

I recently inherited my dad's turntable, a Garrard Zero 100 S. It's always been amazing, and I've always loved it.

However, I noticed that the auto shut-off feature has stopped working.

When a record comes to an end, the pickup retracts automatically, but instead of going down on the start holder and turning off, it just restarts the record again, over and over again.

Same thing happens if I try to manually use the auto stop function. It begins stopping, but then it restarts the record.

Any suggestions on how I can fix this otherwise very useful feature?

I'm a noob when it comes to turntables, so I have no idea how to fix it. If you know, it would be extremely useful with some kind of detailed description.

These tables rarely break, but they all suffer from hardened grease. Very likely this is your issue as well. While you could attempt to spot clean it, best bet is to go through the efforts of a thorough cleaning and relube. Hardest part is removing clips.

Thanks. It seems like the grease has to do with it, since many people are pointing at this as the reason. However, I haven't found any threads that describe in detail how I open it. If you know of any or can find them, I would be more than happy if you could share them with me. Thank you!

yeah I'll concur on the sticky grease. Its pretty much always the problem with any record changer.

Platter comes off by popping out the clip in the very center. I don't remember for sure but something is telling me there is a plastic cover in the center of the platter that needs to come out first in order to get the clip out. If the platter doesn't lift off, give the center of it a whack with a plastic screwdriver handle while applying very gentle pressure under the rim of the platter. It should pop out

To get the changer out of the base, flip the two tabs on the bottoms of the transit screw so they are vertical and lift the whole thing out.

Everything is held together with small retaining clips, and it must go together in the proper order so take lots of pics. I did a Zero-100 a bunch of years ago and as usual didn't document anything but it wasn't difficult, just very tedious. Lots of little parts to keep track of.

The area in red is the auto-stop mechanism. This is not one piece. It is probably stuck together from the dried-up grease. It needs to be taken off and apart. Clean the grease off completely. Use a light oil to lubricant when you put it back together. (I know this isn't your exact tt, but it will be the same mechanism.)

There's a metal shield over the platter retaining clip, under the plastic disc. Don't remove that. Some folks do but it's not necessary.

Iirc there is a big pivot that's part of the auto functions that's multiple layers of armature and a process to remove, but it's what's the issue most likely. You really must remove everything and clean the shaft and collar. The grease is sneaky on these. You can get at the open pivots, but anything with a shaft and collet must come apart.

Yes that upper bit moves, or it should. Heat gun can be your friend here, as well as some penetrating solvent. 3 in 1 makes a bolt loosener that's fantastic.

It needs to move freely or it will not work. Like this.....

This area on my Zero 100 was frozen solid. Lots of heat was required to get it apart.
