General Banter, Recommendations?

So, I'm always looking to increase, expand the music collection. I've been listening to a fair bit of Joy Division, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Bauhaus, The Stooges, The Velvet Underground/Lou Reed, Candlemass, more Candlemass, Bedemon/Pentagram.

I listened to Lou Reed's "Rock 'n Roll Animal," and found it a little lacking. It has a really killer performance of "White Light, White Heat." but was otherwise just meh. And this is an artist that I otherwise enjoy. Maybe I got spoiled by the early VU psych/feedback experimentation? I have a bootleg of the Scepter Sessions Acetate, and it's kinda neat aside from the scratchiness...but I suppose only so much can be done for that. Lol.

Any other good hard hitting recordings in similar veins? Post Punk, Proto-Punk garage sleaze? Perhaps some older Doom bands that are worth looking into? I found Iggy Pop's "The Idiot" different than what I am used to hearing from him, and thought it interesting.

Have you tried Lou Reed's Transformer? Great album. The Glam Rock era of the early seventies is well worth delving into: Bowie, T-Rex, Lou Reed, I'm not that familiar with minor Glam stars but those guys made some great albums.

What about The Cure (Disintegration) or Echo and the Bunnymen (Their first four albums are great, Ocean Rain is superb).

Other things that come to mind are The The, The Chameleons UK, especially the album Strange Times. Smashing Pumpkins...
 
I have NOT listened to Transformer. I'll have to look into it.
Echo and the Bunnymen... no complaints there. Cure... also no complaints. Lol.
Still play Ziggy Stardust fairly regularly. I have a promo edition of a live set from Bowie titled "Stage" which is a pretty alright record as far as live goes. Maybe I need to check out some Diamond Dogs or Aladdin Sane?

Can't say I've heard of The The, or the Chameleons. I'll look 'em up.
 
Try out this year's release by Courtney Barnett "Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit." Great album with definite Lou Reed influences.
 
Check out Interpol. They've gotten to be a little much recently, but Antics is a great album.

Blonde Redhead is my other suggestion - Misery Is A Butterfly or 23.

Wow. I really hope you're like 16 or have lived in a swamp for most of your life or something, because otherwise this is pretty sad. Of COURSE you need to check out Diamond Dogs and Aladdin Sane--Diamond Dogs being like the most quintessential Bowie album there is, perhaps next to Ziggy. And it's hard for me to fathom you calling yourself a Lou Reed fan and not having heard the Transformer album. Vicious, Satellite of Love, and of course Walk on the Wild Side are all Lou Reed standards.

Other people have made some good suggestions, but if you like that style and that period, you would probably enjoy The New York Dolls and their offspring (most notably David Johansen's solo work and Johnny Thunders & the Heartbreakers).

Try listening to some Slayed. Fun band.

To me, Ziggy is THE Bowie album. Never went much farther than that.
New York Dolls are good, and Johnny Thunders is alright. No, I'm not 16, no I don't live in a swamp. I listen to a lot of metal and punk...but also listen to plenty of other stuff. I asked for recommendations, not insults. As far as Lou Reed goes...I thought I was pretty clear that most of my exposure had been via The Velvet Underground, whose music I rather enjoy.
