Genesis Physics 3's

Found a pair of these in good shape. The woofer and passive radiator have new butyl surrounds. I really liked the sound but the guy wants $80 firm. My question is are they something that could work well with about 15-35 tube watts (I have options.)? Does anyone have any knowledge of these speakers?

$80 seems like a fair price for these, if you don't have to have them shipped. You could safely make your money back parting them, even if the cabinets were trashed. If they're in nice shape, you'll not want to do that.

I don't have any experience with a 3-way Genesis or EPI design, but the basic tweeter and woofer are very solid. Get 'em!

Edit: Like many acoustic suspension designs (actually, with the PR, this doesn't even really qualify as acoustic suspension, but you get the idea), these Genesis speakers really open up when you pour on the power. I can't guarantee 15-35 watts will really satisify.

What sort of power do these require to be at their best?
I have a Hafler DH220 (ss 200+ watts) that I could "dust off". Would that do the trick?

On the PR, I always thought they increased overall efficiency because of the extra radiating surface. Are these things gonna need as much power as my large Advents?

Any and all info is really helpful seeing as there is so little on the web!
 
I would think 35 tube watts would be more than enough. I have genesis II's and they sound fine with lower wattage amps. These are not like AR or ADS where if you get a lot of power to them they don't really get a lot louder but they do tend to start sounded better.
 
Genesis III's are outstanding

I realize my comment is about year late, but I just started visiting this site. You didn't say whether you bought those Genesis III speakers. I hope you did. I have had a pair for 25 years and they are terrific. I have bought and sold dozens of speakers in the intervening years, and every time I think it might be time to retire these big boys, I wind up keeping them. They just sound so smooth and effortless. For $80, I don't think you could go wrong. The only consideration might be space. They are large floor-standing units and probably sound better in a big room, but power should not be an issue. Mine have functioned well with a 40-watt Kenwood, an 80-watt Yamaha and a 100-watt Sony. Here's hoping you joined the ranks of happy Genesis owners. (BTW: The fine speaker line of Genesis Physics Corp of the 1970s has nothing to do with today's generaly awful Genesis Multimedia speakers!)
 
The Genesis Physics III has a sensitivity rating of 88 dB SPL, 1w at 1m. 35 watts per channel is fine unless you live in a barn.
 
Wow! I totally forgot about this thread. They wound up being Genesis II's and cost us $70 properly refoamed. I recently recapped the crossover and the Burhoe tweeters really sound quite nice. They have played well with both tubes and SS. I much prefer them to my Advent Large and at the price they were a steal! :yes:
 
I also have Genesis IIs, and they are fantastic. I'm running mine with a Marantz 2230B, and it runs them pretty well.
 
I recently received a pair of Genesis III's from a friend. Everything but the tweeter needs refoamed so they are pretty far down on my list to fix.

I just finished a pair of BA 100's and my son and I are working on some KLH 6's right now.

Presently I use New Large Advents which I like alot. Sometime this year I will see how these Genesis III's stack up against my other speakers.

I will keep everyone posted with my upcoming speaker shootout.
 
Between the II and the III, I preferred the II. Although I don't think I can articulate why at this point. Anyway, I'm in the midst of getting the money together to completely reform and recap the several I have. Can't wait.

Anyone have experiences with the various guys who do refoaming out there, especially for Genesis speakers?


Pairing a set of II's with a Sansui 881 was amazing.

Good grief this is eerie. When I gave my Sansui 881 to my sister, I build a DH-220, which worked awful well with them also.

I figure the Genesis II's are like the old M&K satellites. They can make any amp sound good.
