Genuine NEC transistors for Pioneer equipment.

Hola,

Panda – Colombia

Hello,
greetings to everyone from Colombia:

I am a technician and I have a question for the Pioneer experts.

I have 5 original NEC transistors from a Pioneer ANP-740 board:

- 2x NEC B706 (2SB706A) – blue casing
- 3x NEC D746 (2SD746A) – black casing

These are used (pulled) components, not NOS (New Old Stock), but they passed my multimeter tests successfully. They come from an original board that was dusty, as seen in the photo.

I know they are used in the SX-980, SX-1280, and SX-1980 models. Do they still have value for restorations? I saw a pair of NOS (B706A + D746) on eBay for 189 euros, but they were new old stock.

What would be a fair price for these used and tested components in the U.S. vintage audio market? Are collectors still looking for the original blue NECs, or does everyone now use the MJL4281/MJL4302 replacements?

I attach a photo.

Thanks for your help,
Panda – Colombia

Welcome to AK!

I do not think they are worth much since there are modern replacements available.
Someone may have listed some NOS devices on ebay for a high price but it's extremely unlikely they will ever sell.
And just because yours passed a simple diode test doesn't mean they are up to specification.

Thanks for the reply, my friend.I imagine they might hold some value for a collector.I tested them as diodes and also checked their hFE.
But we're always here to learn a little more.Blessings.

As a (soon former) collector, I have had that choice several times, and I choose new-production matched devices every time.

When you open a collectible solid-state amplifier etc. to restore it, your goal is to put it in original operating condition, not necessarily original parts. I do not look for 50y/o electrolytic capacitors for example as the goal is reliable and up to spec. If new is available then used are pretty much worthless.

Best of luck with them, but I have not found anyone who wants my old take-out T03 power transistors (for example) for free so I scrap them all.

That’s true; if new ones are available, it wouldn't make much sense to use the originals. I got curious after seeing the prices online, which is why I asked. Thanks for the input, my friend. Blessings.
