Getting Serious About Hearing My Music

Budget? What kind of footprint / space do you have or want to devote? Will get you pointed in the right direction.
 
For bookshelfs, it's hard to beat the Pioneer SP-BS22-LR designed by Andrew Jones. Rave reviews. Compact, will fill a room, and reasonably priced.

Depending on your budget, I'd also go with a dedicated HTPC feeding a decent DAC. If that's got analog out, hook it up to a conventional receiver or pre. Don't even need a lot of space - I recently built an HTPC here from an Intel NUC that measures 6x6x2 inches and has a couple terrabytes of storage built in.

And ya - that's a whole nuther topic, but welcome aboard.

I wish I shared your enthusiasm about Pioneer Andrew Jones speakers. I have them all including their bigger brothers and the subwoofer, but they just buzz like my fridge. My Polk Audio TSx200 bookshelf speakers are number of times better in terms of sound reproduction (note that i did not recommend them in my earlier post). They even made the B&W 303 a coworker of mine has sound very cheap.
