Getting the bathroom refitted

As I write this, guys are ripping our bathroom to bits. Well actually, it's ripped out, even the floor. The sink is being re-routed and the new Mira quadrant shower  is going to the opposite side of the room from the old over-the-bath-shower. The old horrible sink, bath and bog was peach coloured eugh! I'm glad I've seen the last of them. It looks strange with everything ripped out. Wifey bailed out and is round at her friends house who gave her a key to use the toilet and chill out away from the noise. Pussy cat, Max bailed out on me too lol. Can't wait to try out me new shower:D.

The old stuff above was causing us some stress as we hated it so much.

You gonna love it. Post an after pic!
Thanks yes, I will. I was surprised at how quickly they had everything ripped out, pipes and wires laid and the old bog refitted to give us somewhere to pee tonight.image.jpegimage.jpeg

Bottom photo is where the bath taps (faucets) used to be and where the shower will go. Top pic is the vanity unit. Re-routed from left of the bottom pic. to make way for the shower. Stepping over the side of the bath was difficult for me because of my back injury so the new shower is going to be soooo good! My biggest worry is that I haven't bought enough tiles. The tiles are 300 X 600 mm and too easily broken.

Going for the traditional British look?

I just went through that a year ago. Ripped out the jetted tub and replaced that with a modular shower. No regrets ...

I'm watching the progress. Hope you and your wife are happy with the finished product.

Thanks, It wouldn't be difficult to improve on what we had, especially the floor. It had small square Italian marble tiles that had little holes in the surface like a sponge that too easily got staining in the grout that filled the holes. It should have been sealed but they just left it and I didn't know at the time. These guys though, have a good reputation.

Good Luck. I'm happy to see you are doing a proper gut job and not a half heart plastic refit.
Thanks, our old bath was plastic and I hated the feel and the way it creaked when I stepped into it.

:rflmao:That reminds me of the old lady my mother used to visit. She lived in an old tenement building in Edinburgh near Dean villiage her toilet was shared between hers and the neighbours across from hers. She had one of those little beds in the living room that was built into the wall and had a curtain she drew to "hide" it.

Good luck with your project, it'll be worth it.

I went thru the same remodel about a year and a half ago and couldn't be happier with how it turned out. We hated our plastic tub also and ripped it out so we could install a walk in shower. It's so nice to have room for two people to shower at the same time.

Like you we pretty much gutted our bathroom, which included moving some plumbing around so we could relocate the bathroom sink.

Here's the thread with a few pics from couple of years ago.

We had ours done when we had our extension built. Having carefully measured out the tiles for ours and ordered accordingly Mrs Hyperion decided we were going to be tiled floor to ceiling, which left us hopelessly short of tiles and delayed the finish by 2 weeks because of the additional order for tiles!

Good luck with yours, it doesn't look like your guys are hanging about. ;)

Very nice. I especially like the pic with the floor tiles. It shows the colours even better.
They're putting down the shower tray here, right now:banana:. Our wee Max is literally a scaredy cat and even when the wife comes in the front door, he acts like a locksmith (he makes a bolt for the door lol). He is staying outside most of the time because he can hear them working.

Thanks. I feel your pain, as the saying goes. It's moida waiting on tiles being delivered. Because they're kinda big, they're too easily broken. They don't half weigh a flippin' ton, too!
By the way, I saw Roobarb and Custard on telly for the first time in yonks, a couple of days ago. Still as wibbly-wobbly as ever:D.

:D The sub floor is completed and fresh gyproc drywall has replaced the old stuff and as you see, the shower tray on its plinth. Centre lines have been drawn for the tiles tomorrow. They are going on vertically. The aquaplus laminate flooring in walnut, is arriving tomorrow. And the electrician is going to see to where the LED downlighters, one of which is a fan too, can go. It's getting exciting! :)

If it's not too late, make sure they're putting blocking inside the walls for safety bars and maybe a fold out seat. Good time to plan for your dotage, right? I see the walls are already enclosed, but if the blocking's there, have them mark the walls and snap some pics for reference later on. Not sure what code there is, but I believe said blocking is required here nowadays.

One trick for other folk retrofitting showers for tubs ... think wainscoting. Much easier than retiling ... here's a pic showing the trim up to where the tub sat ... didn't have to touch the walls otherwise.

(The wall heater was a nice touch too. Always a bit chilly in there before with a Nor'easter blowin' hard.

You know, I'm thinking about removing my tub and getting a walk in shower. The parts I have seen will cost me around $1500, but I have no idea what the plumbing will be. I hope I can get out for less than 3 grand.

Heard the dreaded words "a lot of these tiles are broken", this morning :eek2: . Hopefully not too much. Oh well, I'll just have to count the spaces left and order more tiles to get it finished some other time if he runs out. I'm hoping he'll save some space behind the toilet cistern cabinet and vanity unit. The laminate flooring was delivered 15 minutes ago along with more waterproof underlay than we need so that's a success at least. The ceiling cladding was almost a problem when the guy said " d'you have the clips to join them together?" But I Found an installation video that showed them being stapled to battens and showed it to him on this Ipad. He's going to edge the ceiling with plastic strips so it'll work out ok.

Coming along nicely so far! Only one tile height on the bottom row on these two walls to go and not quite half way through the boxes :D. I took these pics as the guys took a break. I like taking these different stage pictures.:)
