Hi Folks, a few weeks back I introduced a new amp to my set up, a 100V Japanese Sansui AU X11. While listening to records after about the 2nd hour I heard a loud ZAP in my speakers, like the sound of a short of some type. Today the zap returned and I was only able to trouble shoot to find the zap appears when listening to vinyl not through AUX. And so far this is only happening on my AU 517 running as a separated pre amp through my AU 9500 running as a separated power amp. Any insight into this pain is welcome.

Are you running the 100v amp on 120 or do you have a step-down transformer? This might not be the source of the "zap" but you should do it anyway.

And describe again the connections. You mentioned 3 different amps.

Ask around the Sansui forum. It sounds like flaky small signal transistors somewhere in the AU517 phono stage or tone control. If there's any suspect old trannies in there to replace - these guys would know.

This might be the case as I've tried 2 amps now... not sure how to make sure that discharge isn't entering the phono stage... The ground is always connected well from the TT to the amp... I wonder if I'm getting a power surge. I'm not using a surge proof strip but just going straight into the wall and the old sansui amps don't have 3 prongs on their plugs

I'm not currently using the amp that needs the step down... but I have a step down.

I'm running both an AU 517 pre- out through rca cables into the AU 9500 main input... but I'm also using the AU 9500 as an integrated and am getting the same issue
