Give me a better word.

With all the rampant negative snobbery and general dislike of the word "audiophile", give me a better one word description.

GIVE ME A BETTER ONE WORD DESCRIPTION!!!

Frankly I don't understand the phobia around here at being called an "audiophile". According to the dictionary definition just about every one who posts on AK is an audiophile.

But then, I also don't understand the general infatuation with all things "vintage".

"Enthusiast" comes to mind. You can be enthusiastic about gear of any age or any level.

How about "I like good sound on good sound equipment"?

Audiophile is not really a bad word. It's meaning is "audio loving". So how can that be a bad thing? I love audio as well.

The Word Works Just Fine....

accurately describes what it intends to. The problem is with those who chose to twist its meaning and apply a different set of intentions to those it describes.

I am certainly an audiophile pig, of that I am sure.

Really? If the word only meant the dictionary definition then it would be find but when talking with other music enthusiasts it really doesn't. When non music loving acquaintances call me an audiophile I usually deflect it by saying "nah, I just like to build stuff" mostly as a reflex reaction but partly because I don't want to be lumped in with the stereotype.

The word means it's dictionary definition. By always referring to a twisted definition you support that twisted definition.

One word guys! If you've got a better more descriptive word than "audiophile" lets hear it.

Soundfan is a good one but kind of juvenile. Enthusiast isn't bad but enthusiast of what?

The "phile" part of the word might make you sound a bit creepy to the people who never heard of it.

Soundaddict is a word you can use

To me 'vintage' means that you can buy what at one time was the tol equipment at affordable prices. I sure could not afford a $1200 amp in the 70's - but I can buy the same amp, re-cap it, for a heck of a lot less. Same goes for speakers.

The word means it's dictionary definition.

It never works that way because definitions morph over time until the root form of the word is only vaguely related to the current usage. Here's a couple of attempts at a definition from opposite ends of the spectrum.

Reticence to be labeled an audiophile doesn't seem that strange when reading what other people believe the word to mean.
