Hi All, I identified as a stalker because during my recent foray into vintage equipment most of the top googly results were
AK. Now that I've wadded in I'm happy to join the community!
I'm a 63 yo business consultant living outside Philly. Like a lot of my generation I grew up with a multitude of stereo systems. I was never a geek about it; I just got what sounded "good". My budget rose as my income did, but somewhere between getting married and having kids my last system disappeared.
Late last year my 22 yo daughter announced that she was "into vinyl" now, lol. So, I called up my pack-rat Mom to see if she had any old equipment stashed away. Turned out she had a Technics SL-D30 turntable (which I think I gave her), and a pair of AR18S bookshelfs. The Technics auto tonearm wasn't working, and the AR's needed refoaming. So I dug in, and with the help of Youtube got them both working well again! However, I didn't want my kid to have to deal with any future issues. So I bought her an Audio Technica LP70XBT, and found a Marantz SR4320 on FB (along with Sony and Yamaha CD players, and Polk S4 bookshelfs - sold those for $40.) for $40. So she is happy as a clam and actually commented how much she likes the classic dual speaker sound compared to the digital streaming
I had fun doing that, so I decided I would cobble together a starter vintage system of my own around the Technics table (new AT stylus) and Sony player. My first score was an estate sale where I grabbed a pair of EPI A100's and a Technics SA-303 receiver for $50. I refoamed the EPI's and did my first recap (Dayton 10u 250v). I like them very much.
But now I have the bug. I want to hear everything! British (KEF), New England (Boston Acoustics) etc. My next and most recent aquisition were a pair of Advent Prodigy II (cabinets are perfect) and a NAD 7240PE receiver package for $40. I'm waiting for the second Advent's foam glue to dry as I write this.
I can't help but stalk (there I go again) FB marketplace, but with two systems now I think I'm good for a while and want to try a total restore of the EPI's guts. However, I did just see a working Marantz 2245 on FB for $100, and it's only 5 hours away...
