Going Digital!

I honestly don't know what i've done wrong here. I followed all the links and installed what I believe is the appropriate files. but as I follow the instructions, this step does not exist.

13. You will see a list of your ASIO drivers. Double click foo_dsd_asio.

I do not see foo dsd asio. although I see it in the components. anyone up for some phone support in the next day or so? this is very irritating.

this is what I get for repurposing a PC when I'm an apple guy.

Hahahaha...sorry, but that last line was classic! I know how you feel tho....I just trouble shot my new computer and iUSB for about 10 days only to discover my PCB in the iUSB has an issue. AMR is sending me another one. They have excellent support, by the way! If you would have used a Mac/Apple...the IFI products need no driver down load.

But in your case Botrytis is correct it seems.

I went through the download and install first thing. Is it possible to ha d done that and not installed the driver. Damn pc. This is why I hate them. Maybe I'll just use my Mac for dsd. But this should work fine.

ok, so I went back to ifi and started the process of downloading the nano driver, and the computer told me it was already installed. what am I missing here? going to start over. Geez.

I repurposed this computer as a music player. so it literally has foobar and firefox on it. thats essentially it. this shouldnt be so difficult.

I'll have time to actually play with it in the next couple days. last night was just trying to get the dac to show the dsd light. lol..

do you guys do any volume adjustment with dsd files?

what volume setting do you guys use on the ifi going into your amps? I had it set at max going into my amp last night.

I have the Micro. And with it, there's a switch for direct or preamp. I use direct. That way the volume is controlled by the amp.

Keith,

It seems that most have failed to mention the one little trick to bring your Nano device into the proper setting for DSD.........., it has to be set said rate within both Midi Audio ( if possible?, as I'm using a Mac Mini ) and check your settings in the Sound Section, as it has to be configured in both otherwise it goes into the default 44.1 standard green light setting/mode.

I've yet to sample the joys of DSD, as I'm still torn between which audio software program would serve me best as far as SQ and Headless goes?, so I'm trying to see if in fact Audirvanna + Remote App is due anytime soon before committing to say JRiver/JPlay/JRemote or one of the others, as Amarra and/or Pure Channel are somewhat more costly, but if they prove worth it?, then so be it.

But as it stands today.............., PCM is floating my boat and then some, so DSD is in my future, but as far as I'm concerned, I'm not in that big of a hurry, as it's the Music that counts.

Same here, but generally I've its volume knob set at say the 3:00 position, and just set the one on my integrated between 8:40 - 9:00, which are both loud enough to drive our entire home with music, anything approaching 10:00 would more then likely lead to an eviction notice being issued as we reside in an apartment, where I'm always thoughtful of our neighbors.

But the more and more I sit here and try to gauge the whole power rating concept, the more I believe that anything between 15 - 50 w/pc is more then enough power for the average household, less one is using less efficent speakers, in which case I'd say replace them instead of an amp that one loves for its musicality, as a speaker shouldn't dictate one needing say 100 - 200 watts, as I tend to believe it's the lower wattage amps that sound more delicate in nature..........., but maybe it's just how I hear things?.

Anywho..........., back onto said topic.

It's how you hear things. Many different tastes here and everywhere.

Fair enough, but then I guess that's why most listeners in countries besides America tend to love lower powered amps where something like a nicely build/sounding tube amp using 211/845s only puts out say 35 - 40 watts per side, and in all but airplane hanger sized rooms is more then enough.

Yet as the olde adage goes........., to each his/her own, but like with certain governments I tend to associate their actions with said power - which corrupts. It's in the hearing I'd say..........., maybe that's why you'll never see or hear of Shindo Labs or any tube gear from said countries trying to impress with more then 70 w/pc, is because they know something we've in this country forgotten..........., it's called " Purity ".

But I feel ya, but once again like with women, I'd much prefer a soft spoken one versus a big mouthed type with the look/listen at/too me sort of mindset, in which case a gentle whisper is what floats my boat.

Yes, what fixed it was a setting in foobar about native aiso or something like that. a setting buried away. thank god for that online walkthrough.

oh yes, and also, the ifi driver did not instal after I ran the "installation". that makes no sense to me. I had to find the file, then copy it into its correct place.

I am bitching a lot here. sorry about that. I'm coming across much more negative then I really am. It looks like everything is working fine now after some effort. Looking forward to doing some serious listening. also, I only have a few dsd things, so most of my listening is redbook as well.

Hi Keith,

That's great news........, isn't it amazing how said simple hidden control options can throw everything out of whack?, and while I didn't read into your statements as negative in the least, as so much as someone similar to me whom missed certain aspects of getting their iFi up and working at its best, and please don't overlook all the talk that we've gone on and on about as far as cable matching............, as its vital to the voicing process of everything that follows downstream that one gets it right here, or you'd hear the beauty these devices offer in their best light.

And be assured I'm cheating and watching you guys to see/hear your opinions on DSD as a whole, but it's nice to see that at least you read into our shared stories enough to go out and get yourself one..........., now it's time to get the best out of it knowing that no CD Player I've heard in a long time approaches the fidelity you're about to encounter............, No lies, just going on what I hear as a beautifully balanced concept of Music versus mere Hi-Fi Sound Effects and the likes.

Enjoy her.

thanks for all that Kt77. I am looking forward to digging it. one drag is that is will be hard to compare this to my other DAC directly because of all the crazy setup options. wouldnt be a quick switch out to compare. But I will come up with a solution.

Right now I am testing this DAC on my headphone setup. Running Stax, sennheisers, Beyer, and denons for fun.

it was unclear to me, what is the Ohm setting on the ifi nano headphone out?

oh, and there is no switch for running the dac output direct. the volume control is always in the mix.

You must be using it on the preamp selection. Because the direct selection renders the DAC's volume in operable.

You're more then welcome Keith,

Trust in your ears, it won't be hard at all to tell the differences between any of the DACs as heard side by side even after an hour spent on/with each as compared to the finer points of said Nano.

The specs for headphones was located on their home site, so I pray this helps?:

http://ifi-audio.com/portfolio-view/nano-idsd/

Said Micro iDSD is built with more of an upgraded path in mind that is more future proofed whereas the Nano was built at a pricepoint for introduction purposes, and lacks certain afterthoughts that were added to the later design.

Also lacking for example is the built in iPurifier in said iDSD model, that cost an extra $100, but to my mind is certainly worth it as it cleans up the sense of grin or dirt heard through digital devices from an isolation of jitter as well as other internal noises that are inheritance of said designs by nature.

It's not so much as how it compares to other brands, but how it was implemented to sound more realistic as compared to others that might come across as more digital or edgy if you will, there's a refinement to these devices very seldom heard at their price ranges that make them so attractive in my mind, as well as how the parent company voiced them collectively to sound like Music..........., and that's the simplest way I can term what they're doing correctly compared to others geared more towards a fake sense of detail at the expense of both beauty and musicality.

I'm still watching............., so by all means share what your ears hear either way?.

Be thee well.

Keith...what supporting gear do you have? And very good cables make a huge difference in the iFI DSD Micro/Nano DAC.

Also, a few of us rip all CD's in DSD 128, and for existing files not DSD, we upsample them to DSD. So eerything we play through the DSD DAC is DSD 128.
