Color Me Gone
I'm researching the Cain&Cain "Abby", it comes stock with the Fostex fe 164 single driver. The preliminary feedback I've received suggests that while pretty good the new DX3 or EX3 Lowther drivers are better. In your horn speaker research did you come across any information on the Fostex vs Lowthers? Were there examples of each at the AudioFest that you recall - impressions? If the Lowthers are all that I may inquire with Terry Cain about building me a pair of custom "Abbys" with the Lowthers. I'm not making any changes tomarrow but those speakers, among others, have certainly peaked my interest. One more thing, with the Fostex driver the Abby is rated at 92db, whereas with the Lowther it would be more efficient. To see the speakers check the link then click "audio" from the Cain&Cain home page and then "the Abby" under Models in the upper right. Whata think? TIA

MikE...I have looked into a couple speakers using the Lowthers...But I still have not heard any. From what I read about them left me feeling that if I do build some speakers using a Lowther driver...I would listen to them first.

Is there anyone in your area that has a Lowther system? Maybe post at AA to see.

I know you were wanted more information than I gave...and I wish I could give it to ya.

Hi Mike. I'm with gonefishin - you should try to listen to a few systems as single driver set-ups have there pros (many pros) and cons. I was at the Midwest Audiofest and don't recall any Fostex or Lowther based speakers. I have heard a few Lowther rear horns (PM2A and PM5A in medallions, PM2A in Mauhorn 4's) and loved the way they sounded. Actually, hearing them was what got me out of "high-end" burnout and onto SET's in the first place. All where alnico magnet, would have been pretty high efficiency (97db ?) and where powered by SET's (2A3's and 300B's). Haven't heard Lowther's in Voight pipe type boxes but have heard they are pretty light in the bass, more so than a proper rear horn. Actually, the light Lowther bass was what led me to Altec 604's - probably not much below 40hz from the Altecs but way more than the Lowthers and suitably fast and musical.

92db might be kind of iffy with 45's don't you think? It would be great if you could get to Cain&Cain for a listen - especially with your amp - the Abbys look very nice and you read a lot of good things about the Fostex drivers.

If I was going to go the single driver route, I would probably stick with Lowthers and try a DIY rear horn like the BigFun or maybe even the BD-Design Oris front horn and a high-efficiency bass box for below 150hz - the bass thing again :) .
