Good day at the Goodwill

Stopped by the Goodwill down the street for my bi-weekly lunchtime visit. The old Klipsch Cornwalls ($399/pair) that I saw earlier this week were gone. I'm glad, because I was half-tempted to pull the trigger this time, but I really don't have $399 to spend and it would've been a hassle getting those monsters home! I hope an AK'er grabbed 'em.

I went around to the Goodwill Outlet around the corner and saw a big pile of 45s. Check out what I came back with:

• "Louis Armstrong Classics" (double 45 EP set w/cover, Decca, 1954)
• "Glenn Miller Plays Selections from 'The Glenn Miller Story'" double 45 EP set w/cover, RCA, 1956)
• Mills Brothers "Souvenir Album" (double 45 EP set w/cover, Decca - I already own this set on 78!)
• Frank Sinatra "Songs For Young Lovers" (double 45 EP set w/cover, Capitol, 1954 - now I have it on all 3 formats: 7", 10" & 12"!)
• Chris Barber's Jazz Band "Petite Fleur" (45 single w/picture sleeve, Laurie)
• "An Evening With the George Shearing Quintet" (double 45 EP set w/cover, MGM - I have this on LP already)
• Artie Shaw "Four Star Favorites" (45 EP w/cover, RCA)
• Earl Bostic "Bostic Blows" (45 EP w/cover, King)
• Benny Goodman "The Famous 1938 Carnegie Hall Jazz Concert Vol. 1" (triple 45 EP set w/cover, Columbia - I have this material on several different LPs already)
• Coleman Hawkins, Lester Young, Ben Webster, Don Byas, Chu Berry "The Influence of Five" (LP reissue of Commodore material, Mainstream, 1964)
• "The Monkees" (1st LP) (stereo 2nd LP pressing [COS-101RE] with open shrinkwrap on cover and mint disc, Colgems, 1966 - this is probably the 3rd or 4th copy of this I own!)
• Lulu "From Lulu With Love" (stereo LP with open shrinkwrap on cover and mint disc, Parrot, 1967 - reissue of mostly 1964-65 rockin' stuff)
• Billy Preston "I Wrote a Simple Song" (mint LP, A&M, 197? - not sure if I'll like this, but what the heck)

Total price for all: $1.70.

I love the Goodwill Outlet!

OMG I would have bought those so quick. They usually go for around $800 down here on CL. If anything like that makes it to goodwill they put it in their auction where it would sell for 20% higher than market value (see it happen everytime...ebay effect...must win at all costs, damn the economics).

I don't even go to GW here anymore, all they have electronics wise are tube TVs, VCRs, and cassette decks with the occassional 5+ year old DVD player oh and of course shelf stereos and speakers from Sharp, Sanyo, Yorx, etc.

Vinyl is even worse, nothing good ever hits the floors. My guess is either employees are filtering through ebay or record dealers have an "in" and get to see stuff before it goes out. If you ever do find anything good, it's beat to hell. I once donated a bunch of decent stuff in not too bad of shape to my local shop and I went back every few days and it never showed up so I know something is up.

Glad to hear not all goodwills are this way.

As far as I know, Goodwill stores have distribution centers. Things are donated at various stores in an area, then trucked to the distribution center and then sorted and distributed to several stores a few days later. What you donate to your local store may never make it back to your store and be sent to GW stores in your general area. I don't know if this is how it works in your area, but I suspect it is. Ask them at your GW store and they will tell you. They will also tell you what days they get trucks in of new merchandise. Those are the days you want to go, as they are processing and bringing the new items to the floor.
