I see this stuff selling on the auction site for good money if you have the space and can afford to hold on for an indeterminate amount of time. having said that I think it is a fair deal, not a great deal. but then again I don't try and flip gear so you may do better?

I saw that ad. I was damn tempted. If it's all in decent condition it's worth a good bit more than that $1300.
Who knows about the vinyl, but there may be some gems in there, too.

The original deal was for $1100.00 and now he found a SX-3900 so I offered $1300.00 for the lot. If the records were just so so, I might just offer him $1000.00 for the gears.

Not the best spendt $1000.00
The SX-1080 was really dusty and full on dog hair, spend half a day cleaning it and decxit.
SX-3900 was the same way plus missing two slider. PL-50 has a crack dust cover and verneer is all mess up, plus the cart only has one channel playing. Kenwood KD-2077 is missing the stylus, Technics SL-D3 has no cart and no dust cover. Pioneer HPM 100 has a blown tweeter, klipsch KG4 has a blown horn tweeter. We met at his father's driveway with snow unshovaled and he look like an upstanding guy so I didn't test them and told him I took his word for it. Now he has the money and doesn't even bother to answer my calls. I guess being a tournaround specialist you don't always win!

looks to me like you will need to replace the switches on the 3900 , the fingers are sheared off I think. still both those receivers are pretty good. did you get the LPs?

Hmmm... Well, you probably didn't lose money, even after you replace the blown speakers. Still, it's not quite the score you expected, I guess. I figure a clean 1080 should bring $500, so you're halfway there with your investment off one piece.

The LPs were moldy and in bad shape so I passed. I couldn't believe he wanted $300.00 for those moldy LPs.

Believe it. The same reason my local CL is filled with people wanting $2-$5 a pop for crappy thrift store records like Andy Williams and Mantovani. Some people think any old record is made of pure gold.

Is it the tweet or super-tweet that is blown on the HPM-100's James?

The reason I ask is I had a pair of HPM-60's that I was ready to sell at a discount because the super-tweets were both out. While I was listening to them, my son (16) came in the room and said "Dad, back off the treble, my ears are bleeding!". It was the super-tweets. They were not blown - I just couldn't hear them with my older ears. The damn things cross over at like 12K.

Not the super tweets. I had a pair of HPM 40 about a year ago and I thought that the super tweets were bad, so I parted out the tweeters and woofers and cabinets. The guy came to pick up the cabinets ask if he can have those super tweeters. I told him yes he could have them because they are bad. He said no they aren't bad generally, because we can't really hear it. I don't know if that's true or not?
On another note, here's what I just find locally. He is 5 minutes from me and he teaches tube amp repair for free!

I thought $1300 was way too much money. You offered him $200 on top of $1100 for an SX-3900? I hope I am misunderstanding this...that lot was worth $500 plus the space they gained.

Always always always test equipment, take your time, draw it out for hours if you need to. Time is a powerful tool in negotiating.

Good advice! from now on I am going to test all the equipment that I buy. I just clean out most of the bad buys at O'Highways last month and now I got stuff starting to pile up again. I noticed most CL seller met you out side or having reasons for not letting you test the gears are all hiding something.

sounds like you had a chance to haggle the heck out this deal with all those faults, but you took the higher road. :D you're either not cut out to be a true "turnaround specialist" or just very considerate and nice guy who can't say no....or just not cut out to be a "turnaround specialist". :scratch2: i've had a few run in's with coldblooded flippers while buying off of CL locally, but you sound like a nice one. good karma will surely bring some better buys in the future. :thmbsp:

I just wrote him an email. I think I will spend a lot of time at his place from now on. Now I should have no trouble recapp that Stromberg Carlson 433 that I just pick up recently.
