Good Headshell Leads for Ortofon Blue?

One of my headshell leads (green) is looking funky, so i picked up an AT set of leads and replaced the green one, and it caused hum.

Do i need different leads? What works well with Ortofon Blue?

That sounds strange, like you went from bad to worse? You only changed one Lead?

I'd say you'll have to do some further experimentation and examination. Try to keep track of proper lead orientation for proper channels, etc so you won't get things mixed up.

In what way did the original lead look funky? Can you somehow repair that lead, at least short term, go back to square one, and go from there?

Sounds like it’s just not secured fully, or pushed in 100%. Literally any short headshell lead should work just fine.

Double check that it’s perfectly snug and report back.

To be fair it was late at night and I was doing it under some impairment. I will try again today. The old green lead looks liked it was pulled on both ends, with exposed wire. So was just trying to replace it. Maybe it was touching something.

Yeah it was late, and i was moderately impaired, so shouldn't have been messing with it to begin with. I'll try again today and report back. Thx!

Hey All

By the cold light of day I reconnected the wires, and just replaced all the old ones with the new gold plated ones.

I listened to one album, it sounded pretty good, no more hum. Tried another album later that night and it sounded like crap. Very thin and weak sounding.

I also put a new stylus on the Ortofon blue, but that should not cause such poor sound.

It was fine before i tried to change the leads, the green lead looked visually damaged which is why i replaced.

"I am......in a world of ****!" LOL

Anyway, lot's of unknown variables here to weed through. First off, maybe you possibly opted for the $4.99 Leads from some auction seller of very questionable quality.

And then ham fisted them into place after downing a bottle of Thunderbird? LOL

"What's the word, Tunderbird, what's the price, a dolla twice!" LOL

Me, my inherit one problem is, start a project such as this, and I'm in a real shity, evil mood, everything goes to hell in a handbasket and with much later regret. In my older age, I've often learned I was my own worst enemy, drop that ****, take a chill pill, do something else, anything else, and take up any such projects at a later date when I was blowing rolex's out of my ass.

Hehe. Waiting to tackle problems until you are emotionally prepared is a great life lesson.

No these are good cable, $20, gold shielded, AT I think. One lead looked not 100% on, they were very tight. I just used pliers to get it on fully, may help.

I do fix this stuff during day, it's when it doesn't work at 10pm that I do dumb things. Will test again soon. I put the old stylus on just in case soemthing is going on there.

WTF! So, i tighten all the leads, put in my old stylus, and put it on. First song sounds OK for a min, then degrades.

I've checked the wiring now 5 times, everything looks fine. Other than getting different leads cables and trying those I dont know what is going on.

Worked just fine before i got smart and tried to make it better. Fool!

You said you changed the stylus on your Blue , did you make sure that it’s seated all the way into the cart?

I was wondering. It just slides in, I don't hear any click or anything. I've never replaced a stylus on an Ortofon before, but it seems to just slide in.

Looks like it’s seated all the way in to me, but do you have it dialed in correctly with a protractor? Looks like the cart is canted to one side in the picture but that could just be the angle of the picture.

Audiofreak71

Hmm yeah i see that too. It was put on by an audio place, and worked fine until i changed the wires. Maybe the cart came loose when i was messing with it. I will check, thanks

Nah its OK. It is the side handle that is pushing it up looking uneven.

Well I was meaning it looks like the cart is turned inward . Do you have a protractor so you can check it?
