Headshell Lead Recommendations?

Isaac C.

Cat Hoarder
Hello everyone, I am looking to purchase some upgraded headshell leads for around $50-75. The leads on my Sanyo headshell are too big for my Ortofon VMS cartridge, in fact one of the pins on the back of the cartridge broke because I was trying to make the leads fit a little more snug (I will likely just buy another cartridge body). I was looking at some Cardas. Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks in advance!

Silver will be a brighter cleaner sound with the better conductivity but for such a short distance I don't know how much sonic change can happen. It is noticeable with interconnects, silver coated wire.

I'd go copper which is what is used in the Litz wires in my tonearm and headshells leads to the best of my knowledge.

this should be fun. :)

Any issues with running silver in an analog set up?

I ended up purchasing the Audio Nerve Viscera Copper Litz leads because my system is already a bit bright and don't want it any brighter. I also purchased another Ortofon VMS body since the pin on my other one broke. Hopefully these leads will be snug and I won't have to fiddle with them like the others and end up breaking a cartridge pin. Lesson learned, if the leads do not fit good, buy some better fitting leads before you break something.

Curious about your Ortofon VMS choice- little is said here about them. I'd like to hear more opinions on them.

They are from the lates 70s or early 80s, there is the VMS and F Series, both use the same bodies. The differences are in the styli, the VMS TOTL is the VMS 30 MKII and the F series TOTL is the F15. The VMS series is good for light to medium mass arms and the F series is good for medium to heavy arms. Generally all of them are very neutral and detailed cartridges, very comparable to the new 2M series cartridges. The VMS and F series are really great for the money IMO.

The difference in conductivity will be so tiny it will be immeasurable. Silver does not sound brighter either, it is a tiny bit more conductive but frequency wise there is no change. Silver plating makes no difference as skin effect is not relevant at HiFi frequencies.

Thats interesting, I've always wondered about differences in wire and how much it affects sound.

And not my experience. But everyone hears differently and I'm leaving it at that.
Physic is fixed not debatable, it is simply not possible that silver wire sounds different. Silver plating too cant effect anything, skin effect happens at GHz not audio frequencies. Electrons do not move how most people think they are not changed by the conductor either, the wire is like a water pipe, actual individual electrons move very slowly but each one displaces one and at the ends change is instantaneous. Silver is 7% more conductive for a given length and thickness, increase gauge ie thickness and resistance decreases. Silver for audio cable is one of those things that is sold playing on peoples lack of electrical knowledge and playing on things that sound plausible in theory. There have been numerous blind tests done scientifically showing people cant hear any differences blind. If differences exist they are minute and headshell wires we are talking a few cm's of wire, differences in resistance are minuscule and if gauge is slightly different or one is a tiny be shorter or longer difference can be nothing. Electrons dont care if conductor is silver or copper frequencies of signal do not change and that can be tested with an oscilloscope.. Silver wire is not brighter just brighter when polished and shiny. Actually silver tends to oxidise more which is an issue for its conductivity long term.

We can not measure everything (where each electron is every nanosecond to determine if the conductors do anything other than conduct electricity in exactly the same way with the exact same movement of the electrons), so I let this one go. Seriously, I have let it go. YMMV and apparently it does. Enjoy that.

But we can measure an awful lot more than you think. We can measure very accurately how a cable changes a signal, way more accurate than your ears (human hearing is rubbish).
