Good price for Altec Santana II's ?

krowmagnum

Compulsive speaker freak
Per the seller "great shape and woofers re-foamed a few years ago". These are cool end table type speakers with a slate top and pretty beefy cabinets.

There is one completed auction that ended at $250 but it looks like the same speakers were re-listed. It was local pick up only so that affects value a little I think. I'm guessing they are not worth $250 so what's a fair price ?

Any opinions on the speakers would be greatly appreciated too.

I'll be going to check them out in the next day or two. And if I get them I'll probably be running them off a Luxman L-210 or maybe a Pioneer SX-780.

Sadly the Santana's are IMHO the least respected Altec and often parted out. The tweeter in that setup was an afterthought. The biflex woofer is worth more than the intact speakers. Often they are sold to asian buyers for around $300...

Did both versions have the biflex woofer ? I read on another forum posting that the original Santana's had the 15" biflex in a sealed cabinet and the second version was changed to a 12" woofer with the same tweeters in a ported cabinet but it didn't mention the biflex on the 2nd model.

Mine had the 15" biflex woofer. It's been awhile, I don't remember the model.

From what I found online that would be the first Santana's that had a sealed cabinet. See pics for the 2 different models:

Only the early 879A Santana uses the 420 bi-flex, the Santana II is a bit newer and somewhat different creature, it uses the same woofer as the model 15, and model 9, and small cone tweeter. IMO, the cabinets are the most valuable part of the Santana II's.

Unless they're in pristine showroom condition, i'd hate to see anybody put more than 100-150 in them. They could be potentially e-waved for greatly improved results. They're beautiful and well built cabinets, and probably a better basis for a "project" than they are stock performers.

Just my .02................

He's absolutely right about the price and the fact that the IIs use the same woofer as the 9 and 15. Usually the tip top price for them is around $200.00 on a good day. Having said all of that I would also say that you really need to go listen to them and decide for yourself. I've been using the Santana IIs off and on for years now as one set of my primary speakers. I've had most of the speakers that every one around here raves about at one time or another (easily over 100 sets...) and quite honestly I've liked the Santana IIs so much that they always seem to come back to the forefront. I've even had multiple AKers come over to my house and comment on how good they sounded before they had any idea of what they were.

Thanks for all the input, it's been very helpful.

I'm going to see and hear them soon. I really don't need another set of speakers, or have the room for them. But that's never stopped me before !

I'll post an update after checking them out.

i have the cabs, all the drivers, and only the need the time and energy to do an ewave of the santana cab...

This thread has had me thinking today what it would sound like if I unhooked the original tweeters on mine and hooked up my huge Heil air motion tweeters that I've had sitting in the garage for over a year.:scratch2:
