Am going to be in Philadelphia for the week... Can anyone recommend some good record stores (or thrifts for that matter) out there that I should check out?

Will be staying in Valley Forge area. Wouldn't mind coming home with some new tunes, y'know? :D

Hmmmm....unfortunately one that I really liked disappeared when the Leavittown Shipping Center he was in was torn down (I think apart from a Boscovs, a license center and an alcoholic beverage store, he was the only thing really open in a rather large strip mall). This was a place called Forever Records in Leavittown. I have been told he relocated, but have yet to find proof of this. There were also some decent ones in Morrisville and Newtown. You may check out New Hope, it's a pretty hip area, so there should be one there. It has been awhile since I really was in Philly long enough to go record shopping. Once Forever Records closed, I no longer bothered as I had a whole travel route which involved this place as a starting point.

You might check out this place. I've never gotten a chance to visit there yet but it certainly sounds interesting. The link shows some other Phila. area record stores in the ads along the side, too.

You can also log on to the local NPR AAA station in Phila, WXPN, and peruse their underwriters; I know there are a number of local record shops that support the station.

A great station, BTW-- free plug for them from a long time member.

Below are two places I have found to be good sources.

Philadelphia Record Exchange 618 South 5th Street
Repo Records 538 South Street, Philadelphia PA

Too bad ya cant road trip to Pittsburg and check out Jerrys Records......now thats a store, one of the largest in the country......average price $3.00

edit: actually I'm just kidding about driving to pittsburgh. Have a family situation going on; dad's in the hospital right now (doing better tho) so will be staying near the hotel.

Gold Million Records is sort of between the hotel and my conference, so will check them out tomorrow...

hoping to meet up with one of the local AKers Thu

thanks again
Michael

Gold Million is only open a couple days a week for a couple hours. All the record stores have closed. There was a good second-hand LP store for Jazz right downtown maybe close to 5th and Walnut or Chestnut(?) Everything on South Street has closed over last 10 years. And Plastic Fantastic in Ardmore which was the best, closed as well.

actually I found out that plastic fantastic became Gold Million... seems they are open 11-5 M-Sat, 12-4 on Sun...

Dad's back from the hospital... whew!

Thanks again for the tips. It's turning out that I am having a lot less free time than I pictured. :( Probably won't make it to any record store at this rate... ah well...
