Good sounding 2-way with 6.5" - 8" woofer and less than 20" high?

B&W CDM series (1NT, 1SE) fits your criteria.

They can be had at a good value used.

[edit]Oops - saw your budget. These won't fit (figure about $500-$600).

My vote goes to ADS L420. I recommend the JBL L1 as well. Surprisingly, the sealed ADS are quite a bit more efficient than the ported JBLs. I have both and selecting one over the other would be really tough. Probably would go with ADS for jazz/classical and JBL for rock if pressed. Both should be within budget/size requirements. JBL specs were posted previously; here's the ADS specs:

Specifications
Type: 2 way, 2 driver loudspeaker system
Frequency Response: 48Hz to 20kHz
Power Handling: 50W
Recommended Amplifier: 15 to 100W
Crossover Frequency: 1500Hz
Impedance: 6Ω
Sensitivity: 92dB
Bass: 1 x 7" cone
Tweeter: 1 x 1" soft dome
Finish: natural walnut veneer
Dimensions: 17-1/2 x 11-1/4 x 7 inches
Weight: 7kg
Year: 1982

Some ADS speakers (L400?) are 4 ohm.

Looking for something relatively inexpensive, so most likely the used market is where I will be looking. Strongly prefer 8 ohms. Might possibly go with 6 ohms, but not 4. Max height should be 20", but around 16" would be ideal for the space where they would be sitting.

I currently have a pair of B&W V201, BOTL but they sound really good to me. So V202, next model up, is already a candidate. Also have looked at PSB 400 and 500 which are candidates as well.

What brands/models are out there in the used market that fit these criteria?

Opinions please!! :D

Second hand Monitor Audio RS-1. 12" H X 8" W X 9.5" D. Maybe a bit small. 6.5" woofer.
When I bought them, the competition was comparable models of Paradigm, B&W, Definitive Technology and Dahli. The MA's stood out immediately to my ear while subjecting a salesman to a lengthy A/B/C session. Eventually, I purchased the rest of the 5.1 matching set.
The small two-ways seem to depreciate more so than their big tower brothers, so they can be had for a song.
I found another pair for a song a few years later that wound up bumping off the girlfriend's ADS L-420's on her TV system.

AR7 or AR18, they're 16.5" tall and fantastic. the smaller advent is nominally 4 ohm, but have tremendous bass and aren't difficult to drive....highs aren't as clean and crisp as the AR's...and they're 20 1/8" tall...

AR holographic imaging M1's would be another neat choice....

if you can find them, the mid 90's AR 218V or 228 (or 338 3 ways) would be excellent, too....

Since you know you already like B&Ws, maybe B&W DM4s? They're about the dimensions you specify, and I would expect they'd be roughly in the stated price range. Not a two way, however.
